Of the signing, label co-founder Alain Macklovitch (A-Trak) says, “When you meet Tabby and when you hear her music, they match up perfectly. There is an earnest playfulness, and there is also a sort of ‘anything is possible’ ambition. Her songs are honest and sometimes innocent—she lets you into her world. From the moment I met her last year, it seemed like every other day someone new was telling me about her in New York. Once I was in her world, I saw traces of her everywhere in the city. Tabby is contagious!”
The new music is receiving early critical acclaim—NYLON proclaims, “Tabby Wakes knows how to pair the good and the bad…she takes all the parts of the most enviable, Instagrammable lifestyles and lays them all on the table and tears them apart,” while Earmilk adds, “The vibrant song is a blend of trap, rap, and some catchy pop vibes. The lush production and charming vocal style makes it an alluring work of art.” Affinity Magazine furthers, “Tabby Wakes is new to the scene, but she is not going to let that stop her from making an impact…[She’s] ready to share her music with the world.”
Wakes is fresh off her performance at Fool’s Gold’s “DAY OFF” party in New York, which took place this past weekend. The event featured special performances from YBN Nahmir, A-Trak and Black Thought, Pi’erre Bourne, Tisakorean, Kemba and more.
Tabitha Wakefield, known by her stage name Tabby Wakes, was born at Interfaith Hospital in Downtown Brooklyn and was raised in Crown Heights. After throwing legendary “Tabby Time” parties as a teen and starting a DIY recording studio, Wakes began to hone in on her talents as a rapper, focusing on original music and collaborating with producers in the underground New York rap scene like Seltzer. Now 22 years-old, Tabby is freshly signed to Fool’s Gold—the renowned Brooklyn independent label that launched Danny Brown, Kid Cudi and countless others—and recording new music at her own Blahkwork studio in Queens, NY.
