Ghana’s Talented Mathematical Minds Celebrated at the 2024 MISE Excellence Awards

Since 2009, The MISE Foundation has dedicated its work to recognising and celebrating the mathematical talent of Ghanaian youths by providing holistic support and mentorship to develop their highest potential.

Ghana's Talented Mathematical Minds Celebrated at the 2024 MISE Excellence Awards

Through challenging mathematical competitions, MISE identifies, prepares, and connects mathematically talented youth to international maths and science opportunities.

Over the years, MISE has proven to be an important tool for nurturing some of our nation’s best and brightest young mathematicians as well as an avenue for them to gain acceptance and scholarship to some of the world’s leading academic institutions and programs.

This year, eight (8) students were recognised with awards and a further forty (40) earning honourable mentions. The celebration took place at the prestigious Labadi Beach Hotel, Accra graced by proud parents and esteemed guests.

Award Winners:

In the Mathematics category, five (5) exceptional students received the FKA Allotey Award, named after the foundation’s founding chairman.

● Master Excell Kumah Awusi – Presbyterian Boys Secondary School

● Ms. Naana Ekua Adokua Annan- Lincoln Community School ● Ms. Akua Ntiwaa Mensah – Holy Child School, Cape Coast

● Master Joel Boateng-Yamoah – Prempeh College
● Master Amin Jhumra Smith – Lincoln Community School

In the Computational and Applied Mathematics category,

● Ms. Samaira De and Master Aryan Ajit Patil of Lincoln Community School were awarded this year’s USAID Science Champion Award for their scientific research excellence, using mathematics innovatively to create a potential solution to international development challenges.

Additionally, Ms. Naana Ekua Annan, Ms. Akua Ntiwaa Mensah and Master Excel Kumah Awusi were further awarded the foundation’s highest honor – The FKA Allotey Mathematics Champion Award in recognition of their exceptional mathematical talent, leadership potential and personal character.

Ms. Zeynep Karakus of Galaxy International School was adjudged the 2024 MISE Junior Champion.

Reflecting on their achievements, one of the award recipients said,

“MISE has really pushed the boundaries of what I thought I could achieve. The most rewarding aspect for me is the CHALLENGE, especially when the problems seem unapproachable.It is essentially problem-solving, which I love.”

The mathematics scholars earned the opportunity to proudly represent Ghana at this year’s International Mathematical Olympiad in England – the World’s Championship Mathematics Competition for High School students attracting student teams from over 115 countries.

The science research scholars will showcase their research at this year’s Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles, USA-the world’s largest pre-college STEM competition.
