Major Mahama’s trial: 12 suspects sentenced to life imprisonment

In a landmark verdict, the trial of the suspects involved in the tragic killing of Major Maxwell Mahama in Ghana has reached its conclusion.

It will be recalled that the young military officer was gruesomely murdered in 2017 while on duty in Denkyira-Obuasi, sparking national outrage and condemnation. After nearly 7 years of legal proceedings, the court has now delivered justice by sentencing 12 out of the 14 tsuspected individuals to life imprisonment for their roles in the heinous crime.

The 12 suspects were found guilty of conspiracy and murder of the late soldier. They include William Baah, the then Assemblyman of the area as well Bernard Asamoah, Kofi Nyame, Akwasi Baah, Kwame Tuffuor, Joseph Appiah Kubi, Michael Anim, John Boasie, Akwesi Asante, Charles Kwaning, Emmanuel Baidoo and Kwadzo Animah. 

The court, presided over by Justice Mariama Owusu, a Justice of the Supreme Court sitting as an additional High Court judge, convicted the 12 based on the jury’s verdict. However, Bismark Donkor and Bismarck Abanga have been acquitted and discharged following a not guilty verdict by the jury.

A seven member jury today, January 29, 2024 after about an hour of deliberation returned the verdicts, bringing an end to the case that had been before the court since 2018.
