<![CDATA[It was all fun and excitement over the weekend when the 10 Finalist of the Miss Malaika Ghana competition embarked on their first task after the eliminatory Mini-Finals that sent ten unlucky delegates out of the competition for this year.
The local tourism episode has always been one of the most anticipated episodes of the Miss Malaika Ghana series for viewers who get the unique opportunity to explore with the delegates some of the excited tourism destinations right here in Ghana.
For the delegates, this task presents an opportunity to explore and learn more about their country in order to inform them as Tourism Ambassadors of the country wherever they go. It is also a challenge embarking on the trip is often challenging in and of itself.
The tourism weekend began on Saturday August 25, 2012 with an elaborate congratulatory diner set for at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra with some A-List celebrities. From there, the delegates set off on Sunday 26 August for the beautiful Aburi Botanical Gardens where a ready tour guide gave them a well rehearsed lesson on all the exotic tree types that the Garden houses and the myriad purposes they serve.
From there the ladies headed straight for the legendary Tetteh Quarshie’s cocoa farm in Mampong- Akuapem – The first farm of its kind planted by Tetteh Quashie when he brought the cocoa bean to Ghana.
Here the delegates found that, contrary to popular belief, Tetteh Quashie did not swallow the Cocoa bean but rather hid them in his luggage when he was returning from Fernandopo currently known as Equitorial Guinea. The ladies were given the opportunity to taste the cocoa in its raw state and take some away with them as souvenirs.
The next stop on the busy itinerary was the awe inspiring Boti Falls in Koforidua. The ladies descended about 200 stairs in order to get to the waterfalls. Fortunately for them, they were able to go very close to the water fall, some even entered to take pictures. The water was at 6 ft due to low rainfall however it was still a beautiful sight.
From there the delegates ended the day at the beautiful Beige Village at New Abirim, about 3 hours drive from Koforidua. Monday was spent leisurely at the Hotel with the ladies taking part in exciting activities from golf lessons to fishing, to swimming, fun games and a movie.
Tuesday morning started off with a tour to the Mines of Newmont Ghana (Twifo project). This insightful visit was followed by a trip back to Aburi to visit with the Chief and Queen Mother.
