Occupy Julorbi House: Be at the forefront, not behind your keyboards- Efia Odo to celebrities

Ghanaian actress, Efia Odo has called on her fellow celebrities to be at the forefront of the “Occupy Julorbi House” protest, and not behind their keyboards.

According to Efia Odo, who has been physically present at both days of the protests, it is important for celebrities who wield a certain power in the country, to come out and stand in solidarity with Ghanaians.

“Yesterday, social media was going crazy, a lot of the celebrities they started to speak up. Hopefully, they’ll show their faces. I put it to them that you guys are on Twitter saying you support us, why don’t you come out and actually be at the forefront? Don’t hide behind the computer at the forefront of your home. I could have been home but I’m out because I care about the people and I want to be the example that I want to see. Hopefully, we will have more of the celebrities here to support because their children’s future matter,” she told TV3 in an interview on day 2 of the protests.

Efia Odo also expressed her displeasure at the way protesters were handled by the Police on day 1 of the protests.

“What happened yesterday doesn’t have to happen. It’s unnecessary, we’re not violent people, we’re peaceful people. Ghanaians are generally peaceful, so we’re just trying to peacefully protest so hopefully what happened yesterday doesn’t happen today. Because if it happens today, we’re going to be here tomorrow,” she said.

Day 2 of the “Occupy Julorbi House” protests is currently under way.

The protest, organised by pressure group “Democracy Hub” is to call on “the President and members of the Economic Management Team to #FixTheCountry in light of the level of economic mismanagement and theft that has engulfed our government from the highest levels.”

Day 1 of the protests, on Thursday, September 21, took a different turn when protestors were arrested and detained by the Police.

About 49 protestors were arrested and detained at various police stations in the city. They were later released in the wee hours of the day.

Celebrities were lambasted by their fans for staying mute and not joining the ordinary Ghanaian to protest.
