Ghanaian Dancehall artiste, Samini, recently shared his perspective on the relationship between the South African music genre Amapiano and Ghana’s iconic Azonto.

During a recent interview on Property Fm, Samini asserted that Amapiano is essentially a rebranded and repackaged version of Azonto, emphasizing the borrowed compositional elements.

While acknowledging Amapiano’s origin in South Africa as a subgenre of house music in the mid-2010s, Samini highlighted the striking similarities between the two genres. Despite Amapiano having its roots in South Africa, he pointed out that contemporary interpretations often blend Azonto elements, creating a fusion that blurs the lines.

Samini noted, “Today if you do Azonto and you add one or two things to it, somebody will say it’s Amapiano, but Amapiano is something which is already South African.” Despite these parallels, he underscored the enduring uniqueness of Ghanaian music, stating that Amapiano will always be associated with South Africa, while Ghana’s musical identity remains distinct and unaltered.
