Kartel was freed after the Court of Appeal overturned his murder conviction, citing that the interests of justice did not require a new trial. Alongside his co-accused, Shawn ‘Storm’ Campbell, Kahira Jones, and Andre St. John, Kartel was initially sentenced to life in 2014 for the 2011 killing of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams.
Vybz Kartel, born Adidja Palmer, is a significant figure in Caribbean music, known for his collaborations with Rihanna and Jay-Z. Despite maintaining their innocence, Kartel and his co-accused endured Jamaica’s longest trial, lasting 64 days. Their successful appeal was heard by the Privy Council in London, which highlighted issues with juror conduct. The final decision to acquit the men was made by the Court of Appeal, leading to widespread celebrations among fans and fellow artists.
