Mean Girls

This teen comedy is based in part on Rosalind Wiseman’s 2002 non-fiction self-help book, ‘Queen Bees and Wannabes’, which depicts female high school social cliques, school bullying and the damaging effects they can have on students.

Lindsay Lohan stars as Cady Heron, a 16 year old home-schooled girl who not only makes the mistake of falling for Aaron Samuels (Jonathan Bennett), the ex-boyfriend of Queen Bee Regina George (Rachel McAdams), but also unintentionally joins “The Plastics”, led by Queen Bee Regina George herself.

This teen movie is a brilliant coming-of-age comedy that will resonate with anyone who has ever stepped foot inside a high school.

The Truman Show

This film stars Jim Carrey as Truman Burbank, a man who grew up living an ordinary life that unbeknown to him, takes place on a large set, populated by actors for a television show about him. One day, he finds out that the world he thought was real is fiction. What will he do with his new-found knowledge?

This wonderful movie grapples with issues such as social alienation, worries about lack of control and the fear of how advanced technology has superseded our understanding of what is real in a light-hearted, family-friendly way.

Anchorman: The Legend of Run Burgundy

This satirical comedy features Will Ferrell as Ron in arguably his best role. He stars as the titular character who is San Diego’s top-rated newsman in the male-dominated broadcasting of the 1970’s. That’s all about to change for Ron and his cronies when an ambitious woman is hired as a news anchor.

This comedy is packed with silly humour, countless quotable one-liners and a very relevant take on the battle of the sexes that still resonates today.

Forrest Gump

Slow-witted Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks) has never thought of himself as disadvantaged and thanks to his supportive mother (Sally Field), he leads anything but a restricted life. Whether dominating on the gridiron as a college football star, being a soldier in the Vietnam War, or captaining a shrimp boat, Forrest Gump is inspiring with his childlike optimism.

Whilst this could be considered a boomer classic, this is an amazing movie that appeals to all generations. It is one of those movies that could be considered as the ultimate feel-good movie that highlights the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity.

The Ring

It sounds like just another urban legend, a videotape filled with nightmarish images which leads to a phone call, foretelling the viewer’s death in exactly seven days. Newspaper reporter Rachel Keller (Naomi Watts) is sceptical of the story up until four teenagers all mysteriously die exactly one week after watching the videotape. Allowing her investigative curiosity to get the better of her, Rachel tracks down the videotape and watches it herself. She now has just seven days to unravel the mystery.

This remake of the 1998 Japanese film ‘Ringu’ is sure to get the pulses racing. Even if you watch it for the sound effects and creepy atmosphere alone, it remains an intriguing piece of cinema that was a new take on horror when it first came out.
