Tyla wins her first VMAs Award for Best Afrobeats

South African singer and songwriter Tyla, continues to gain recognition with her global hit single “Water.”

The 22-year-old artist recently secured the 2024 MTV VMA award for Best Afrobeats with the same track.

In her acceptance speech, Tyla celebrated the win as “a significant moment for Africa,” noting that “Water” had made an international impact and demonstrated that “African music can also be pop music.”

“Like this is just so special but also bittersweet, because I know there’s a tendency to group all African artists under Afrobeats,” she said. “African music is so diverse, it’s more than just Afrobeats.”

Meanwhile, Taylor Swift commanded the night with seven wins, tying for most overall, while Eminem dominated most solo male artist wins.
