The previous time I used Emirates for a long distance journey, I was spoilt with the comforts of business class and so I watched some new movies, listened to some new music and slept through the journey (well, not forgetting the eating the drinking of course haha).  But my recent trip to Dubai was in an economy class, and without the option of sleeping comfortably, I had to find innovative ways of enjoying the long journey.

So, this time, I explored the inflight entertainment (cleverly referred to as ICE) a little more and I was particularly happy with the music selection. Apart from finding several Ghanaian music (including Pat Thomas, Rocky Dawuni, Samini, Guru and many more) under the world music category, I had a great journey with the UK Number 1 hits charts.

My infatuation with British music and pop culture is an exciting one which began in my formative stages when my parents lived in the UK. My parents used to record a lot of British programming to send to me back home in Ghana and I grew up watching music shows like ‘Top Of The Pops’, which strangely made me like even britpop and electronic pop.

It was therefore amazing going through the UK Number 1 hits on Emirates, as I relieved most of the songs that made me happy as a kid – particularly the charts for 1985 and 1986. Surprisingly, I could still sing along to most of them; and I am sure any passenger who saw me lip-syncing wondered ‘what the hell is wrong with him?’.

Another exciting era of the number 1 hit charts was the period from 2000 to date, where my taste in music was informed now  by access to MTV Europe  and BBC Prime/Entertainment in Ghana (courtesy DStv), as well as family and personal travels to the UK. This is the era of Westlife, Blue, Atomic Kitten, S Club 7, So Solid Crew, Gareth Gates, Will Young, Girls Aloud and many more.

Enjoy these videos of some of these songs.
