The detention of these young citizens is unlawful and unconstitutional; We must unite to stop galamsey – Alan Kyerematen

Independent presidential candidate Alan Kyerematen publicly expressed his support for individuals arrested during the recent protest against illegal small-scale mining, known as galamsey.

The politician referred to these protesters as “the heroes of our time,” acknowledging their resilience in facing the hardships of unemployment and hopelessness in Ghana. He urged them to remain hopeful, stating, “Do not be dismayed; there is light at the end of the tunnel. Furthermore, do not be intimidated or haunted by fear, but be inspired by the challenge of success.”

The founder of ‘Movement for Change’  also called for unity among Ghanaians, declaring that the detention of these young citizens is “unlawful and unconstitutional.” He encouraged citizens to rally together to “#StopGalamsey” and safeguard the nation’s future.

He further made a passionate appeal to the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, urging him to protect the legal rights of young people without compromising his professional integrity. 

“I stand solidly behind you, and will fight with you shoulder to shoulder,” he affirmed, emphasizing the critical need to address the challenges posed by illegal mining.

The protests, held at the 37 Roundabout, escalated on September 22, 2024, leading to a confrontation between demonstrators and the Ghana Police Service. 

The protest, known as the #ReOccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration, has sparked the #FreetheCitizens campaign on social media, with a growing number of celebrities voicing their support. Public figures such as Ama K. Abebrese, Berla Mundi, Efya, Lydia Forson, and Kofi Kinaata, among others, have taken to X (formerly Twitter) to demand the release of the arrested individuals, citing violations of human rights, including lack of access to food, water, and legal representation.

 However, the campaign gained traction after the Accra Circuit Court, on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, charged the demonstrators with conspiracy to commit a crime, namely unlawful assembly. Social media platforms erupted in outrage, with advocates condemning the treatment of those detained, particularly after a court decision to keep them on remand for two weeks without bail.

As the situation unfolds, Kyerematen remains dedicated to advocating for a “peaceful, prosperous, just, and united Ghana,” working towards a brighter future for all citizens.
