Rev. Sam Korankye Ankrah, the Apostle General of Royalhouse Chapel International, has  appealed to the Inspector General of Police, the government, and relevant stakeholders for the immediate release of the detained #StopGalamsey protesters.

He voiced deep concern for the young men and women arrested during the recent Democracy Hub demonstration against illegal mining and the socio-economic challenges facing the nation.

“I am pleading with the government, the courts, and the IGP to release these individuals. They should be granted bail and, if necessary, brought before the court if they have done something wrong. Keeping them in cells only worsens the situation, fueling anger and frustration, which could lead to further unrest,” Rev. Ankrah stated.

While acknowledging that some actions during the protest were inappropriate, such as the alleged incident where a protester threw away the key to a police vehicle, he emphasized the need for compassion. “If that happened, they certainly crossed a line. As one of the fathers of this nation, I call for mercy. Our sons may have made mistakes, but let’s forgive them. Throwing them behind bars won’t resolve the problem. Let’s release them and encourage peaceful, democratic demonstrations.”

Rev. Ankrah underscored that the frustrations driving the protests require a compassionate response, urging the need for dialogue to prevent further escalation of tensions in the country.

Recall that the protesters were arrested during a three-day demonstration at the 37 Roundabout, where they raised concerns over the environmental destruction caused by illegal small-scale mining (galamsey) and economic mismanagement.

The peaceful demonstration turned tense on Sunday, September 22, 2024, when a major confrontation broke out between the protesters and the Ghana Police Service, leading to the arrests of several individuals. Following their arrest, the detained protesters were sent to court, where they faced various charges related to their actions during the demonstration.

Currently, they have been remanded in custody until their cases are called, with many advocating for their immediate release. This situation has ignited discussions around the right to protest and the government’s responsibility to address the grievances that fueled the demonstrations.
