<![CDATA[Yes, we told them!!! When I first broke the news of British boy band, One Direction’s short visit to Ghana in the Ghanaian media, it immediately caught the attention of actress, TV host and presenter, Ama Abebrese. She was less than pleased with tweets from the band members that made the whole of Accra, the capital city of Ghana look like one big slum, and she made her fingers do the talking as she wrote back to the boys on twitter to register her displeasure. I followed up with a post on he thoughts and it appears we have achieved something by not keeping quiet; several intentional blogs/ websites have featured Ama’s reaction. She also spoke on BBC radio about her concerns. Here is how, popular American blogger, Perez Hilton wrote it: While many saw One Direction’s recent charity trip to Ghana as an act of kindness, others viewed it as an inaccurate depiction of their country! We previously showed you the pic of 1D in Ghana and told you about group member Niall Horan’s tweet, which stated his realization that poverty is indeed VERY real. Now it looks like Niall’s tweet didn’t quite go over so well with the country’s celebrities, who interpreted it as him saying ALL of Ghana is impoverished. One Ghanaian actress, Ama K. Abebrese, blasted off tweets to Niall, which read:

@NiallOfficial n @onedirection Your tweets about the slums and poverty of Accra, Ghana was very touching…….however..

@NiallOfficial n @onedirection … Next time, also tweet about the luxury hotel and VIP treatment and beauty of the country you enjoyed.
Another Ghanaian actress, Lydia Forson, tweeted:
Dear @onedirection next you visit a country, remember like yours there are beautiful and ugly parts. Don’t base your views on one part
While we understand how Niall’s and the group’s comments could’ve been hurtful to the people of Ghana, the focus, however, should really be on the act of kindness that was done. Celebrities like One Direction, too, should also realize how great of aninfluence they have on their fans, who might be likely to take their naive ignorance as fact. Perhaps this incident will make 1D more aware of what they say and maybe provide them with more eye opening experiences!]]>
