On Saturday the 26th of June, 2022, the Cheeky Monkey Club, a leading activity centre for children in Ghana, held an open house in their new facility located in East Legon, ahead of their MindCraft summer camp set to start 4th July.

The Cheeky Monkey Club, as part of their key intentions, is creating an environment where children can learn critical thinking and confidence through play. The Open-House attracted over 150 attendees which included curious parents with their children. The space was packed with children cladded in superhero costumes, partaking in different activities such as painting exercises, obstacle courses, zipline adventures and a swim demonstration. While the children played, parents took detailed tours of the space and connected with other parents.

The aim of the open day event was to give everyone an in person experience of the upcoming MindCraft Summer Camp.

Research shows that play improves the cognitive, physical, social and emotional well-being of children. Through play, children build confidence and learn about the world and themselves. They also learn skills they need for study, work and social relationships, such as confidence.

Founder and Club Director, Asha shared, “children are brilliant and need to be enriched with diverse experiences outside of the year’s academic calendar.”

She recounts the events that led to the birth of Cheeky monkey, “I started Cheeky Monkey because there almost no activity centres in Accra, for children. It is essential for a child to have some leisure, fun and play as these interactions shape their thinking and equip them with basic knowledge that allows them to become social beings. The Cheeky Monkey Club is a space where that can happen.”

The Cheeky Monkey Open-House day event, which was held in the newly acquired space allowed the community to have access to the facilities the children will use during the forthcoming Mindcraft summer camp event and meet the Club leaders.

Some parents in attendance expressed how stunned they were by the organization, facilities and delivery. Some went ahead to say that their expectations were surpassed, the children had the time of their lives and mentioned that they were looking forward to returning.

The MindCraft Summer Camp is intended to expose the children to activities related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), coding, team building, body and brain coordination and improved flexibility and balance. These benefits are blended into activities like nutty scientists, lego invention convention, virtual reality (VR) gaming, to name a few.
