Ghana’s only open Transgender musician, Angel Maxine has revealed that when she first went to secondary school, she was put in the girl’s dormitory because everyone assumed she was girl based on her voice and her looks.

I don't care if Ghanaians don't see me as a good role model for their kids- Stephanie Benson

According to the “Wo Fie” hitmaker, although she had the male sex organ, her features on the outside made people assume she was a female, without any doubt.

Maxine made this revelation while speaking as a guest on the If More Let’s Divide Podcast hosted by Mutombo Da Poet and Frederick Eliz.

Narrating her first experience in secondary school and how she was automatically placed in the girl’s dormitory, Maxine explained that she had to draw the housemistress’s attention to her original gender, and she was subsequently stripped naked just to be sure.

“When I went to secondary school, I was taken to the girls dormitory because they couldn’t tell my gender and my name was my name still. When I went to school at first, I was wearing a jeans and a shirt and there were other girls who had also come newly and were wearing the same jeans and skirt. They just put me together with them. It was just my voice and my looks so they didn’t think twice. So, when I went to the dormitory and saw all the girls, I said what would I do, so I went to the housemistress and told her I was a male. They had to strip me naked just to be sure,” she narrated.

LGBTQ+ is however, frowned upon in Ghana, and over the last few months, there have been serious discussions surrounding an Anti-LGBTQ+ bill that has been presented to parliament waiting to be passed.

The proposed bill includes criminalising LGBT advocacy, requirements to denounce “suspects”, advocates for conversion therapy and imposes longer jail sentences.
