The DStv Eutelsat Star Awards, an ongoing partnership between Eutelsat and MultiChoice Africa, is aimed to stimulate interest in science and technology and to inspire innovative thinking among secondary and high school students across the continent.

In its fifth year, the Star Awards has inspired creative thinking among students and created awareness on how science and technology can be applied to everyday life as well as the many ways that satellites already impact the development of the African continent by accepting poster and essay submissions on the topic “How Satellites Have Helped Us To Understand And Take Care Of Our Planet.”

On the 14th of January 2016, MultiChoice Ghana awarded four students from four different schools for being the best in Ghana in this year’s DStv Eutelsat Awards.

In the Poster category Patrick Twumasi Yeboah from Prempeh College took the first place whilst Manuela Yeboah a student of Crown Prince Academy, took the second place. For the essay category, Ayawen Asuinura of the Presby Boys Secondary (Legon) won 1st place while Rohith Ravi, a student of the Delhi Public School International, is the runner up in 2nd place. The students were presented with fully installed decoders and subscription for their participation.

The winners were selected after a thorough adjudication process made up of a panel of judges with engineering, artistic and communications backgrounds.  They were Mr. Henry Kanor, The Director of Engineering at the National Communications Authority, Ms. Anne Sackey, the Public Relations & Marketing Manager at Multichoice Ghana, Mr. Francis Doku, Group CEO of Rave media, journalist and media consultant and Mr. Nana Anoff, talented artist and owner of Nanoff Gallery.

The two winning entries from each category have been submitted for the continental level adjudication to compete with all the winners from other African countries. The overall winner in the essay category will be invited to see a live rocket launch and to visit the Eutelsat’s headquarters in France while the overall winner in the poster category will visit Eutelsat’s headquarters and a satellite construction site.   Merit award winners will also win a trip to Johannesburg to see DStv’s technical facilities and television studios at the MultiChoice Africa offices.

At the handing over, Nii Amah Dagadu, Regional Marketing Manager Western and Central Africa for MultiChoice Holdings who stood in for Mr. Cecil Sunkwa Mills, the General for MultiChoice Ghana, stated how proud he was that over 100 students in Ghana took the time and effort to participate in the essay and poster competition. He also congratulated the teachers, who supported their student, for their hard work and patience with the students and cautioned them to cautiously take the students through the rules of the competition in the coming year as several have been disqualified for not meeting the rules and for obviously copying previous winners’ works.

Multichoice also supports other deserving CSI projects and for five (5) years, MultiChoice Ghana has supported the Community Bee level of the Spelling Bee Competition, which is organized by the Young Educators Foundation, a local NGO dedicated to improving education in Ghana.

MultiChoice Ghana has also invested in 90 Ghanaian High Schools as part of the company’s Corporate Social Investment (CSI) Initiative by donating DStv hardware and TV sets to senior high schools.  The installations are part of a broad MultiChoice community development strategy to leverage company assets and expertise toward development and growth of communities in which the company operates.  MultiChoice provides the schools with the equipment as well as access to the DStv Education Bouquet, the Bouquet combines the sound and imagery of television to support teaching and learning.
