Innovation of Skills Hitherto (ISH) to champion cervical cancer screening in Ghana

The Innovation of Skills Hitherto (ISH), a consortium of youthful researchers based in Ghana is poised to champion the screening of cervical cancer in Ghana.

The group is committed to promulgating awareness of good maternal health practices and fetal alcohol syndrome; a congenital defect of the brain as result of alcohol consumption by mothers during pregnancy.

Their aim for choosing cervical cancer is to sensitize the public on the disease which accounts for 20 to 25 percent of all new cancers among women in Ghana.

According to the group by 2025, there will be over 5,000 new cases of cervical cancer in Ghana, with projected 3,361 deaths thereof. 

The group believes that, the menace is 100 percent preventable and curable if it is detected at the early stages however, over 3000 women in Ghana are affected annually. 

The group thinks that, a lot of young people have little or no knowledge of cervical cancer test, let alone being vaccinated.

They say, experts also agree that one of the most important things that women can do to reduce their risk of cervical cancer is to receive regular screening.

The group for that matter will officially launch this project on the 12th of May 2019 in Accra; to begin their activities across the country.
