As Ghanaians mark Sunday May 13 which is recognized globally as a Mother’s Day, ace actress, broadcaster and multiple international award winner Akumaa Mama Zimbi, known privately as Mrs. Joyce Akumaa Dongotey-Padi, has spoken on the essence of the day and why it is worth celebrating.

According to Mama Zimbi, the essence of Mother’s Day is for mothers to enjoy having been blessed to have children, rather than to expect so much gratitude and appreciation from children toward mothers. It is a day for mothers to reflect on their roles and results of their motherhood so far, and even contemplate on the way forward. It is a day for mothers not for children.

As to the origin, every day has been, is and always should be mother’s day. Every day should be a day to fully be aware and appreciate the spiritual value and beauty of motherhood.   Also, since it is a day basically for reflection and assessment by the mother herself, she can choose to spend the day with the individuals who have contributed to her role as a mother.

Motherhood can either be an acquired role over persons you did not naturally give birth to, or by giving birth. For me, I strongly believe that every woman has the potential to be a mother so all women need to love life and celebrate life because we give meaning to life.   She added that, ‘parenthood which includes Motherhood is a very important institution which can make and unmake our society. On this day, mothers must proof their true understanding of their own role by loving all those who allowed and helped them to be what they are. If you are mother, then it’s the father of your baby who made love to you to create the baby, so when there is a father, you really need to respect him. Also, no child ever asked to be born. Children are born as a result of parents wanting children. So you should be grateful to your child for allowing you to become a mother.’

On the issue of whether bad mothers need to be celebrated on this day too, Mama Zimbi stated that forgiveness and appreciation are important keys for the survival of every family. She also urged that, we must all accept that a mother will always be mother, and must be respected as such.

To mothers specifically, she said to them that, ‘all mothers must know that, a mother’s love last longer than peace, because mothers raise leaders and peacemakers. Therefore, in this election year, Ghana needs true mothers to stand up to their God-given roles.’   In her conclusion, she dedicate this Mother’s Day to the weak and suffering teenage single mothers in Ghana, who by design of circumstances are struggling hard to survive and also make their babies survive.

She also sent a strong message to the young women who are refusing to be mothers that, instead of them investing more in better vibrators and sex toy, focusing all your sexually frustrated hearts toward career, money making and competing with fashion, they should please be what God made them to be. And they should also admit to being women and enjoy the blessings of becoming a mother after marriage.
