<![CDATA[On Wednesday 17th October 2012 the world famous Empire Leicester Square will play host to a truly
unique event that is set to become one of the biggest premiere’s of an African film ever seen in the UK.
This much‐anticipated glitzy occasion is the premiere of AMINA, a psychological human drama, which
features Nollywood megastars OMOTOLA JALADE‐EKEINDE and VAN VICKER alongside top British movie
stars WIL JOHNSON and VINCENT REGAN.
Nigerian cinema – popularly known as ‘Nollywood’ is Africa’s largest movie industry both in value and the
number of movies produced per year. Nollywood is the worlds second largest producer of movies and is
the No.1 cinema art form across Africa and the global African Diaspora with millions of fans worldwide.
Films made by experienced Nigerians living in the UK Diaspora now represent an exciting new addition to
the industry and are generically known as ‘New Nollywood’. AMINA, one of the very few Nollywood films
produced and certified as a UK film is the latest of a new breed of Nollywood movie that can match the
industry’s new found status. Indeed, a British film with Nollywood sensibilities.
Written, produced and directed by CHRISTIAN ASHAIKU, an innovative Nigerian‐born London based
filmmaker; AMINA tells a deeply emotional and dramatic story dealing with the themes of love, loss and
redemption. Told in flashback, AMINA is about the life of a gifted young black British woman called Amina
(Omotola Jalade‐Ekeinde) who, devastated by a series of life changing events suffers a total memory loss
and finds herself incarcerated in a mental institution. As her memories begin to return, things become
even more complicated. Only one man, her doctor (Wil Johnson) can help Amina. The only problem is he
must overcome his own demons before he can help Amina confront her tormented past and guide her to
a future of hope.
Shot completely on location in a secure North London mental institution, AMINA is the first British movie
starring Nollywood’s most bankable actress and Ghana’s biggest male star, who act alongside two of the
UK’s most charismatic and well‐loved character actors and whole host of exciting newcomers. Sensitively
handled, this touching and heartfelt human drama attempts to deal with the universal instinct to suppress
the most painful memories to the ultimate cost of mental well‐being. Boasting high quality production
values, AMINA is being described by mainstream industry insider as possessing real crossover potential
and a film that can elevate and redefine Nollywood to become more widely recognized within
mainstream cinema.
AMINA is a production of AOC COMMUNICATIONS in conjunction with AFRICAN FILM TOURS, two unique
London based media companies that together have a mission to produce inspirational commercial feature
films and at the same time contribute to the development of exhibition possibilities of world cinema for a
global audience.
WIL JOHNSON, lead actor and co‐producer of AMINA said; “I’m thrilled to be part of this production. I
believe that the story will resonate strongly with British African‐Caribbean audiences and beyond and I
hope that through one woman’s journey to self discovery, Amina will cross over and connect with
audiences all over the world.”
