Some 80 ladies turned up for the Ghana auditions of the Africa’s Next Top Model reality television show over the weekend. Held at the M Plaza Hotel in Accra, the hopefuls thronged the event venue with the sole purpose of making the final cut, and a chance to represent Ghana in the maiden edition, airing soon on  Africa Magic Entertainment on DStv.

Headed by Supermodel Oluchi, the ANTM team will in the coming days announce who among the lot has made it. Recording takes off in South Africa from August.“We chose South Africa to host the competition because considering the African continent, South Africa is about the only country with a well-structured fashion industry and very busy one because almost every province holds its own Fashion Week” Oluchi says on why South Africa was chosen to host the reality show.

Africa’s Next Top Model is the African extension of the very popular of America’s Next Top Model franchise owned by Tyra Banks. According to Oluchi, she is sure that the African version would have a similar impact on fashion in the continent, creating awareness and education on the industry and opening up more opportunities for models within the continent and abroad.  Auditions had been held in South Africa, Kenya and Mozambique ahead of the Ghana auditions. Nigeria and Angola will soon have their auditions on July 23 and 26 respectively; with dates expected to be announced soon for Ivory Coast and Tanzania.
