<![CDATA[Pilolo Ghana, a youth volunteer group originated in Takoradi (Western Region-Ghana) is meant to bring together the youth to help develop the community in which we find ourselves. It’s our vision to encourage the youth in the community to participate in societal development. Pilolo Ghana in its 2 years of existence has embarked on several community driven projects including re-painting of pedestrian crossings, educating and creating awareness on Road Safety among schools and communities, clean-up exercises, as well as advocacy in peaceful elections among others. On September 21, 2017, which marks the National Volunteers Days and Founders Day, the group in collaboration with the Blood Bank Unit of the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital Sekondi, birthed a Blood Donation Project at Takoradi Market Circle. This exercise was aimed at supporting and saving lives of people in need of blood while restocking the depleted regional blood bank. The project came through with no financial sponsorship but services from sponsors. Major source of funding came from volunteers contributing massively to ensure the requisite items needed for the project were purchased. Pilolo Ghana and the Blood Bank had a target of 100 units of blood but at the end of the exercise the team managed to exceed to 107 units of blood. According to the Blood Bank Executive, Mr. Emil Anornu, for the year 2017, this has been their highest recorded blood units donated so far in the Western Region, to the Effia Nkwanta Blood Bank. He was much appreciative and surprised about the efforts, commitment, determination and energy put up together by Pilolo Ghana to exceed their target. More than 300 people trooped in to either support or donate blood. Some of the elderly present who couldn’t donate blood because of their age enjoyed full body organ scans, eye screening, dental check, Hepatitis B screening, Sugar check-ups, vital check-ups services offered alongside the blood donation. The project received support from: Effia Nkwanta Blood Bank, GC Health Center, Revive Trinity Health Center, Hillcrest Hotels and apartments, iCodeGh, Nuel’s Food Zone, VMinc, EC Media, Paragon Fm, Yfm, Radio Premier, Skyy Power Fm, Empire Fm, Beach Fm, GhOne and 3 Music. For more information on what to do and not do before and after donating, Medical benefits of donating blood.
