Popular Ghanaian Reggae artist, Jonas Kojo Kurankye, well recognized in the music profession as Ras Kuuku, has appealed for extra slots for Reggae music in award schemes and in the media space.

The ‘Poum Anthem’ hitmaker explained that Reggae music speaks and focuses about positive things but is not given much attention in the country.

Ras Kuuku, who was speaking in an interview with Graphic showbiz, opined that, “We only have Few slots in our award schemes, and I want to plead with awards organisers to give us more. The media can also help project Reggae music by giving us good airtime on both TV and radio.”

The 2020 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) Reggae Artiste of the Year further disclosed that, Reggae is a type of music that has been globally accepted and if Ghanaians give it a chance in Ghana by allocating it more slots, they can cash in from it. He emphasized that, “The likes of Stonebwoy, Samini, Shatta Wale have gotten the recognition outside the country, but we can project more artistes if we give the genre more attention here.”

The musician asserted that Bass Awards, which is the only scheme used to honour Reggae artistes in Ghana is no more, thus he urged other companies to come up with an event to replace it.

“I would want another organisation to come up with an award scheme to honour Reggae musicians. Bass Awards did its best, but it was short lived. I will be happy if another entity come up with a similar event to honour us”, he stated.
