Review: ‘Jamming Spot’ makes an impressive debut

<![CDATA[Finally, there is an entertainment program on Ghanaian TV that seems to get the mix of celebrity news, gossip, red carpet events, music videos and celebrity interviews right! ‘Jamming Spot’ debuted on Viasat 1 last week and I must say that I was impressed with the format; they nailed it spot-on, putting it ahead of many TV shows after just one showing. Unlike most TV formats that are hosted by loud and immature ‘wannabes’, who only care about grabbing the spotlight, Benny Blanco and Agnes Ntow, hosts for Jamming Spot make it seem effortless and natural. It is also apparent that a great deal goes into the production; Jamming Spot is not just another TV show to make someone popular or to fill the slots. The scripts, particularly for news and events in town, are well written and not culled from a newspaper or website like other TV shows do (most often without even proper credits to the source). In fact, it is one of the few TV shows in Ghana that make me wish I had covered some of my stories from an angle similar to what was portrayed on the show. Jamming Spot has interesting segments, and it would be interesting to see whether it would still remain interesting with segments like celebrity choice music videos, interviews, spotlights etc in the coming weeks. My favourite segment is the events segment because they don’t rush through the event or repeat pointless images in telling the story; viewers get a full sense of what happened at the event with images and a quality voiceover.

I guess Yaw Sakyi’s ‘Rundown’ on TV Africa and Jon Germain’s ‘Allo Tigo’ on Metro TV now have competition in terms of entertainment shows on TV that I make a point not to miss. I just hope Jamming Spot would sustain the quality production throughout, and I won’t have to eat my words a few weeks down the line. Jamming Spot airs every Friday, 8pm on Viasat 1.
