South African wines and Ghanaian chocolates come alive at grand wine tasting event in Accra

It was an evening of glitz, glamour, wines and chocolates as Wines of South Africa (WoSA) hosted the 2022 edition of its annual Grand wine tasting event in Ghana, at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel, on Saturday, July 16.

The roadshow event, organised by WoSA in collaboration with the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA), saw a beautiful collaboration between Ghanaian chocolate producers and South African wine producers.

Guests were able to taste some of the finest wines South Africa has to offer, alongside a selection of chocolate produced in Ghana.

The winemakers on exhibition included: House of Mandela, UniWines, KWV, Spier Wines, Vinimark Wines, Overhex Wines, DBG Wine, BonWines, Libby’s Pride Wines, KoopmansKloof Wines, Bridge of Hope Wines, Cape Dreams Wines, and LaRicMal Wines.

The selection of chocolates on display for tasting and pairing was a mix of brands such as Kamini, Sekoe Chocolates, Gablin, Kabi and more, sponsored by Ghana Export Promotion Authority  (GEPA)  to promote Ghanaian chocolatiers as a complimentary product to South Africa wines.

The Ghanaian Chocolatiers also participated in the WoSA Grand Tasting Event in Lagos Nigeria on 14 July 2022

Matome Mbatha, Market Manager (Africa) at Wines of South Africa described the partnership of as groundbreaking and very important. Siobhan Thompson, CEO of Wines of South Africa highlighted the continuing growth of South African wines across markets in Africa, such as Ghana. ” Exports of South African wine to African markets has risen from 15.5 million litres 23.4 million litres over the last five years, and doubled in Ghana over that same period,” she revealed.

Grace Jeanet Mason, the South African High Commissioner, tasting some wine

Ms. Grace Jeanet Mason, the South African High Commissioner to Ghana on her part called for more of such beneficial collaborations between South Africa and Ghana on the backdrop of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to ensure more regional integration. She remarked:  “This is continuously strengthening our bilateral relations, looking at what we have and promoting our competitive advantages  and finding the niche in our products. We need to promote these Ghanaian chocolates in South Africa as we promote South African wines in the market.”

Wines of South Africa (WoSA) is a not-for-profit industry organisation which promotes the exports of all South African wine in key international markets. The Ghana wine tasting event was held in partnership with South African Airways, Citi FM, Ameyaw Debrah Media and Movenpick Ambassador Hotel.
