Astute member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Otchere-Darko, has openly declared his support for the LGBTQI+ community in Ghana.

According to him, although the majority of Ghanaians are against the group and their activities, he has the “sense of justice to disagree” with them.

“I am against the anti-gay bill & not shy to say so. I am a proud Ghanaian who cherishes all that is good about our value systems, including tolerance. And, I will defend the right of minorities everywhere. I have the courage and a sense of justice to disagree with the majority,” he tweeted, Thursday, November 11.

Gabby’s tweet has generated several reactions with over 900 comments since he wrote the tweet.

In one of the comments, a user by the name @Douglas_fokuo expressed his worry about the negative health implications it will have on the country.

“@GabbyDarko, We invest in Public Health to improve positive health behaviour and not to encourage behavioural practices with unhealthy outcomes, then we later go and borrow money to come and address such public health issues; STIs, HIV, etc. Does it make sense to us?” he asked.
Another user by the name @Bridget79414820 wanted the government to focus on working on the many problems facing the country, instead of focusing on what people choose to do with their bodies.
“We have bigger fishes to fry as a country. Poor sanitation, poor healthcare, horrible roads etc are some of the pressing issues we should be debating and curbing, as they all contribute to our short average lifespans of 64, not what 2 grown ups decide to do behind closed doors,” she tweeted.

Gabby’s tweet comes at a time when some religious bodies, including the the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council and The Church of Pentecost reiterate their commitment to getting the Bill passed.

Meanwhile, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has served notice that the voting on the ‘controversial’ anti-LGBTQI Bill will be made public.

He said Parliament will ensure that Ghanaians watch and see which side lawmakers vote on after the final debate on the bill.
