Nana Ama Mcbrown attributes poor state of movie industry to lack of structures
Award-winning Ghanaian Actress and Television host, Nana Ama Mcbrown has attributed the current state of the Ghanaian movie industry to the lack of structures and a proper governing body.
According to the “United Showbiz” host, since her entry into the movie scene, she has worked independently and not under any regulatory body.
Speaking in an interview on Starr Chat with Nana Aba Anamoah on Wednesday, she stated;
“Since I started it has been an independent job, independent producers and even when we had a board and all that, I will say that it wasn’t too active. If it was active a lot of movies wouldn’t have come out within that time and the reason is that because the structures from the top are not there.”
Nana Ama, who has become a household name, added that the lack of structures has given just about anyone the opportunity to produce movies that end up on the wrong streaming platforms.
“Right now in Ghana, anybody can pick a camera and call the shots and say I’m the producer. However, YouTube is the ultimate sales point now and everybody would put it there. We have other alternatives like Netflix and all that because we started to tell our stories the wrong way,” she explained.
Adding, Nana Ama revealed that because of the independent nature of productions, producers were mostly profit based and not targeted at selling the Ghanaian movie industry.
“It was a profit-based thing for everybody. We were not thinking about how we are selling Ghana rather we were thinking about how to enrich our pockets, especially the producers. People like us were learning on the field so from the beginning it was a learning process. Until we got to a stage we realized that this is how we are going to tell the story differently,” she added.
