The Dagomba people have a new traditional leader after 17 years of vacancy as a result of the infamous killing of Ya-Naa Yakubu Andani in 2002.

The protracted peace process, led by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, saw the two royal houses of Dagbon finally come to an amicable settlement, with both parties reportedly making compromises.

President Nana Akufo-Addo, former presidents John Mahama, Jerry John Rawlings among others were present for Mahama II’s coronation today.

1. He will be 80 years in 2019

According to 3news.com, Ya-Naa Abukari Mahama was born in 1939. This makes him one of the oldest people to have ever ascended to the throne in a major traditional area in Ghana.

2. He is an uncle to the last Ya-Naa

The Andani rule under Ya-Naa Yakubu was cut short by his untimely killing. So the House of Andani has the opportunity to continue their rule. They have called on the uncle of the slain king.

3. He is a farmer

The incoming Dagbon ruler has been described a successful crop farmer with great expertise in bullock ploughing.

4. He is one of the biggest landowners in Ghana

Per custom, an elder or ruler from a royal home in Ghana is most often than not, a landowner. Mahama II is up there with the biggest landowners. He owns the Dagbon land which is 14, 416.5 square kilometres in area.

5. He is an experienced horseman

Just like many noblemen from the north of Ghana, the new Ya-Naa is a horse breeder and rider.
