What comes to your mind when you think of #digital #technology and #society?

Is it the hip urban youth chatting online and the techies writing code for their next breakthrough product? Or is it the lack of internet access and digital mobile devices that a three year old can handle but a 60 year old person is struggling with?

One way or another, digital divides manifest in diverse forms all across the world.

With the digital transformation pushing forward, digital divides are growing worldwide.

But there is a silver lining – digital change makers and pioneers are role models who make sure that no one is left behind. They resolve the alleged contradictions between traditional and contemporary lifestyles, between urban and rural areas, and the use of digital technologies in these communities. Because digital change happens in places where you might not expect it.

Hence, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) launched the exhibition “Chiefs in Tech”, implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and Kwaku David Photography. BMZ invited Chiefs and Queen Mothers from Ghana, who are digital pioneers in their communities, to be part of this photo exhibition and to showcase their engagement with digital technologies. For many people digital technology such as mobile devices are already an integral part of their daily lives in remote areas just as much as in cities.

Digital technologies already help us reach the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Beyond solving development challenges in a variety of sectors, such as healthcare, agriculture and the energy sector, digital technologies accelerate access to knowledge, jobs, foster equality and participation of different groups.

The photo exhibition “Chiefs in Tech” portrays female and male traditional authorities from different (rural) regions of Ghana. Behind each portrait lies the story of a fascinating individual who functions as a digital pioneer utilizing digital technologies in their communities to close the digital divide.

Personally, I use the phone and the tablet in my daily routines to book appointments, write notes, save information and data and surf the internet for research purposes. In this way, I am able to take photos, videos and record audios of our festivals and important activities in the community and share them with the world. Furthermore, I am active on social media platforms, such as Facebook and WhatsApp. Thus, I can keep all information and data for the future and I can organize my social activities and access my calendar to plan upcoming events.
Digital devices give us access to social media. Although, social media exposes one to educative materials and funny things, it should be used for rightful purposes. It should be beneficial to the user and the user should not abuse it.

I think that my use of digital devices makes me a modern chief.

The use of digital devices has made my life easier. My first digital device was a Toshiba Laptop and I still use it for business purposes, which is mostly for E-Mails and other correspondence.
The use of digital devices can preserve and disrupt our tradition in a good as well as in a bad way. Looking at the good side, personally it has made it easier for me to communicate with friends and family members anywhere in the world. On the bad side, particularly younger generations spend most of their lifetime using digital devices, instead of spending time physically together. I think that people abuse social media platforms and do not think about the consequences. This can make it a dangerous tool.

All in all, I use digital devices because I feel they provide the easiest ground for sharing information. In this way, I can easily communicate with my kinsmen. Importantly, I can also reach the Northern Region and do not need to travel for each meeting. This has immensely improved the communication with different regions across Ghana. Ghana Tourism Authority Celebrates ‘Feast Ghana’ on May Day with a Taste of Culture

The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) in collaboration with the Public Service Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress (PSWU of TUC) and the Queen Mothers Foundation, have hosted a spectacular event, ‘Feast Ghana’, to celebrate May Day. The event, which took place at the Forecourt of the Accra International Conference Centre, brought together over 2,500 workers from various institutions in the public service to experience Ghana’s rich culture through food, music, and dance.

The event which is part of the Ghana Cares program that seeks to ressusicate the tiurism sector, was a taste sensation, with a display of Ghana’s diverse culinary landscapes featuring dishes from various regions of the country. Food stalls offered a wide range of local delicacies, while musical performances and concerts by renowned Ghanaian artistes such as Samini, Great Ampong, Naa Amanua of Wulomei, and others.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Mr. Akwasi Agyemang reiterated the GTA’s commitment to showcasing all aspects of the Ghanaian culture.

“Food, music, and dance are the rhythm of our culture, and we’re committed to using them to showcase the best of Ghana. Our ‘See Ghana, Eat Ghana, Feel Ghana, and Wear Ghana’ campaign is dedicated to promoting domestic tourism and sharing our unique heritage with the world, hence an event like Feast Ghana. We’re excited to continue celebrating and sharing our culture with the world.” – He stated.

Some distinguished personalities from the public service, the diplomatic community, and traditional authorities, including the queen mothers, graced the occasion. The queen mothers and other dignitaries were resplendent in their colourful traditional regalia, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Ghana

The ‘Feast Ghana’ event offered a unique opportunity for public service workers to experience Ghana’s culture and cuisine. VRA COMMISSIONS RENOVATED KALEO D/A PRIMARY SCHOOL

As part of its corporate social responsibility, the Volta River Authority (VRA) has renovated the Kaleo D/A Primary School in the Nadowli-Kaleo District, Upper West Region and provided ancillary facilities to enhance teaching and learning.

Prior to the renovation, the Kaleo D/A Primary, which lies in between the Authority’s two solar power plants at Kaleo lacked the needed infrastructure to promote good education for the kids in the community. In light of this, VRA, being a socially responsible organisation opted to upgrade the facility as part of the Authority’s corporate social responsibility.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Ag. Director, Water Resources and Renewable Energy at VRA, Ing. Abdul Noor Wahab, who spoke on behalf of the Chief Executive, said, the strategic location of the school made it impossible to ignore the deplorable state of infrastructure, and brought to fore the need for VRA to embark on these renovations. He asserted that, this activity was aimed at putting the school in a better condition to improve the quality of teaching and learning.

He said, VRA in collaboration with relevant authorities, went ahead to identify aspects of the school’s infrastructure that impeded the smooth teaching and learning process. From weak doors, broken windows to inadequate furniture for both teachers and students, Ing. Wahab indicated that “by improving the poor nature of infrastructure of the school to a much more suitable state through the provision of basic needs identified, he was hopeful that the facelift would promote teaching and learning and by extension inure to a total community development”.

He urged the community to support and protect the solar power plants since they would in due time appreciate the impact of the project on their lives, and the development of the community in general. He advised the school authorities to inculcate the spirit of maintenance to ensure that the investment made to the project yielded the expected results.

For her part, the Head Teacher of Kaleo D/A Primary School, Madam Sophia Sabogu, expressed gratitude to the VRA for giving a facelift to the school. She noted that the revamped facility would positively impact teaching and learning as well as attract more learners to the school with its beautiful appearance. “The renovation means a lot to the pupils, teachers, and the community as well. I can say we are privileged to have this from VRA. We are most grateful to the VRA, and we pray that God will replenish the VRA a million times,” she said. She noted that, the Kaleo D/A Primary School, which was started in 1947, currently has one hundred and seventy-two (172) pupils and seven (7) teachers.

Works undertaken at the school include:

Replacement of classroom doors as well as that of staff room and headmistress’ office
Supply of school desks for children and teachers
Construction of borehole and overhead tank
Repair of kitchen building
Construction of toilet facilities for both teachers /students
Painting of the school
Provision of tables and chairs for library
Tiling of headmistress office and library
Replacement of school windows
Supply of cupboards
Supply of ceiling fans and lights

Present at the handing over ceremony were the District Chief Executive of the Nadowli-Kaleo District, Hon. Katherine Tieyirr Lankono, the Regional Education Director, Mr. Razak Abdul Korah, the Caretaker Chief for the Kaleo Traditional Council, Kanyini Naa Ali Gado, Opinion Leaders, Management and Staff of VRA, as well as a section of the students who joined in the fanfare even though the school was on recess.
