“The fact that the scholarship was about women means that Nexford is interested in the development of women in business. That’s important to me,” she notes. Faith wants to become an “inspiration to other women so that they can aspire to be more”.

Faith learns alongside other women like Luibov Ilina, in Germany, who wants to be a neurosurgeon and an entrepreneur. She’s studying on Nexford’s Bachelor of Business Administration: “I have a startup project, but I realized that I lacked business knowledge, how to find investors, how to manage finance,” she says. “But I understand it’s a powerful tool that I have to use if I’m going to be a businesswoman.”

“Networking in any industry is important especially in today’s job market. However, for women, networking is sometimes the only way to gain admission or acceptance into specific industries. Networking among women has grown exponentially over the past decade and has given rise to forming female only networking groups. Not only do these groups offer advice on “moving up the corporate ladder” but also offer support on topics such as asking for flexible hours to care for young children or aging parents, and how to discuss salary increases. They also often include motivational and uplifting stories from others who have faced similar challenges or roadblocks. My advice would be that when deciding which networks to join, do a little research and make sure the network offers open communication while also maintaining professionalism.”

“It is a bit of a generalization to say that women are more compassionate by nature than men, but research shows this to be true. The University of Cambridge carried out a study and found that, on average, women have a greater ability to recognize what another person is thinking or feeling. However, being compassionate can be a double-edged sword in the workplace. Some may take advantage of you for your compassion, while others may be inspired by it and support you in your actions. What really matters is that you are always genuine when expressing compassion. Take the time to understand where your team members are coming from, care for them and show them genuine concern. You should also look at their circumstances and do your best to take that into consideration when deciding on an action plan for your team. Show them that you are not just concerned about your personal or company goals, but also about theirs. So, work on the feedback that hurts you the most and make small adjustments while maintaining your authenticity. It is all about developing your toolkit rather than changing who you are.”

The Old Mutual Financial Services Monitor is a study aimed at uncovering the financial behaviour, attitudes, and perceptions of working Ghanaians. Not only has it achieved this objective, but it has also provided valuable insights for Financial Services Providers (FSPs) to better serve their customers.

Today’s focus is on retirement savings and the attitude of the working Ghanaian towards it. The monitor reveals a high correlation between adult dependency and retirement savings. But first, let’s delve into what it reveals about retirement savings.

According to the Monitor, retirement savings ranks 8th among savings goals. This clearly indicates that retirement savings is not a priority for the working class. Approximately 6 out of 10 working Ghanaians are not saving for retirement, with this figure even higher amongst informal sector workers.

What could be causing this?

Financial literacy is generally low in the country and the national discourse on retirement savings and planning is not enough. However, this presents an opportunity for FSPs to incorporate financial education into their strategies and product development to increase awareness.

A high number of those not saving implies a correspondingly high number of adults relying on their children for support in old age. According to the monitor, 7 out of 10 Ghanaians are counting on their children to support them in their old age, particularly those in the 50 to 57-year age group. Is this a national concern?

Absolutely. What about the children or young adults who need to plan and save for their own futures? This also highlights the percentage of working Ghanaians experiencing financial stress, which stands at 64percent.

Ghana Tourism Authority Celebrates ‘Feast Ghana’ on May Day with a Taste of Culture

The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) in collaboration with the Public Service Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress (PSWU of TUC) and the Queen Mothers Foundation, have hosted a spectacular event, ‘Feast Ghana’, to celebrate May Day. The event, which took place at the Forecourt of the Accra International Conference Centre, brought together over 2,500 workers from various institutions in the public service to experience Ghana’s rich culture through food, music, and dance.

The event which is part of the Ghana Cares program that seeks to ressusicate the tiurism sector, was a taste sensation, with a display of Ghana’s diverse culinary landscapes featuring dishes from various regions of the country. Food stalls offered a wide range of local delicacies, while musical performances and concerts by renowned Ghanaian artistes such as Samini, Great Ampong, Naa Amanua of Wulomei, and others.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Mr. Akwasi Agyemang reiterated the GTA’s commitment to showcasing all aspects of the Ghanaian culture.

“Food, music, and dance are the rhythm of our culture, and we’re committed to using them to showcase the best of Ghana. Our ‘See Ghana, Eat Ghana, Feel Ghana, and Wear Ghana’ campaign is dedicated to promoting domestic tourism and sharing our unique heritage with the world, hence an event like Feast Ghana. We’re excited to continue celebrating and sharing our culture with the world.” – He stated.

Some distinguished personalities from the public service, the diplomatic community, and traditional authorities, including the queen mothers, graced the occasion. The queen mothers and other dignitaries were resplendent in their colourful traditional regalia, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Ghana

The ‘Feast Ghana’ event offered a unique opportunity for public service workers to experience Ghana’s culture and cuisine. Most of the patrons were excited about the initiative and commended Ghana Tourism Authority and its partners for organizing such a memorable event, which will undoubtedly contribute to the promotion of domestic tourism and the preservation of Ghana’s cultural heritage.
