Tokyo 2020: Olympics opening ceremony director sacked over historical Holocaust jokes

The show director of the Olympics opening ceremony has been dismissed, one day before the event is due to be held.
Footage of Kentaro Kobayashi from the 1990s recently emerged in which he appears to be making jokes about the Holocaust.
Japan’s Olympic chief Seiko Hashimoto said the video ridiculed “painful facts of history”.
The dismissal is the latest in a string of scandals to hit the Games.

Tokyo 2020 – postponed last year because of the Covid-19 pandemic that has constantly threatened to derail the event – has seen three men forced to step down since the start of 2021.
Earlier this week, a composer quit the team creating the ceremony after it emerged he had bullied classmates with disabilities at school
In March, Olympics’ creative chief Hiroshi Sasaki quit after suggesting that plus-size comedian Naomi Watanabe could appear as an “Olympig”. He later apologised
And in February, Yoshiro Mori was forced to step down as the head of the organising committee after he made remarks about women that were criticised as “inappropriate”. Mr Mori was quoted as saying women talked too much and that meetings with many female board directors would “take a lot of time”
This latest scandal has seen former comedian Mr Kobayashi strongly criticised for a sketch he performed 23 years ago, in which he and another comedian pretend to be children’s entertainers.

In the sketch Mr Kobayashi turns to his colleague, referring to some paper dolls, saying they are “the ones from that time you said ‘let’s play the Holocaust’”, according to AFP news agency.

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga described the comments as “outrageous and unacceptable”, while Rabbi Abraham Cooper, of the US-based Holocaust research body Simon Wiesenthal Center, said: “Any person, no matter how creative, does not have the right to mock the victims of the Nazi genocide.”

Mr Kobayashi also issued a statement responding to his dismissal.
“Entertainment should not make people feel uncomfortable. I understand that my stupid choice of words at that time was wrong, and I regret it,” it said.

Friday’s ceremony, which Mr Suga said should proceed as planned, will officially kick off two weeks of competition.
However, after the removal of Mr Kobayashi, organisers are now reassessing how to hold Friday’s event – which will only be watched by about 950 people in the stadium, in order to minimise risks.

“With the opening ceremony being so imminent, we apologise for causing concern to those involved in the Olympics, to the citizens of Tokyo and the Japanese public,” Ms Hashimoto said in a statement.

The scandals have done little to stop massive unease about the Games, which were postponed from last year due to the pandemic. The head of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Committee admitted this week that he has not ruled out cancellation, even at this late stage.

Despite concerns, the first events are under way – opening on Wednesday with a softball match between Japan and Mexico

A recent poll found some 55% of people in Japan were opposed to holding the Games, amid fears it could become a coronavirus super-spreader event, Reuters news agency reported.

Already, organisers are dealing with rising Covid case numbers among athletes and officials. On Thursday, they said 91 people accredited for the Games have now tested positive for the virus.

An increase in cases among Japan’s population – only of a third of whom have been vaccinated – has also led to a state of emergency being declared for the duration of the Games.
However, World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus congratulated organisers on Wednesday for having so far “done your best”, telling them a “zero risk” Games was not possible.
“The mark of success in the coming fortnight is not zero cases,” he added. “The mark of success is making sure that any cases are identified, isolated, traced and cared for as quickly as possible.”

The first events of Tokyo 2020 have already begun, with the hosts Japan winning their softball match on Wednesday.

Tina Knowles shared how proud she is of Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s 6-year-old twins Rumi and Sir in an exclusive interview with E! News.
Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s twins are ready to run the world, according to their grandmother.
In fact, Tina Knowles believes the 6-year-olds have already found their true passions, with Rumi focusing on art and fashion.
“Rumi is amazing—an amazing artist, painter and creator,” Tina gushed to E! News’ Francesca Amiker during the Kentucky Derby. “How could they be anything else growing up in that environment? All we talk about is creativity and fashion.”
While Sir is much more reserved than his sisters, including 12-year-old Blue Ivy, the House of Deréon designer described him as “very, very smart.”
“Sir is very quiet,” Tina noted, adding that her grandson “does all of the numbers stuff, so he’s not into fashion as much.”
And the twins are already well on their way to success. After all, Rumi recently made history as the youngest woman to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 for her feature on Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter track “Protector.” The impressive feat broke the previous record held by her sister Blue, who was featured on “Brown Skin Girl” in 2019 when she was just 7 years old.
So, what does Tina think of Beyoncé and Rumi’s venture into country music?
“We’re from Texas,” she said. “We’ve been part of that culture for a long time and I was very excited about it.”
Calling Cowboy Carter a “nice history lesson” for fans,” Tina added of Beyoncé, “She has this way of doing things subtly but educating, and so I’m really proud of that.”

After Bridgerton’s Phoebe Dynevor debuted a gorgeous engagement ring at the 2024 Met Gala May 6, E! News can confirm she’s set to tie the knot with producer Cameron Fuller.
You’ll burn for this news: Phoebe Dynevor is engaged.
The Bridgerton alum is set to tie the knot with producer Cameron Fuller, E! News can confirm. In fact, Phoebe—who first sparked romance rumors with Cameron in early 2023—debuted her gorgeous engagement ring on the 2024 Met Gala red carpet May 6. (See every star at the gala.)
While Phoebe, 29, and Cameron, 28, have maintained a low profile throughout their relationship, they did make a rare public appearance together at the Wimbledon tennis tournament in July 2023.
Months later, in February, Cameron—the son of A Quiet Place producer Brad Fuller—was by Phoebe’s side at the 2024 BAFTAs in London.
And although she had her diamond accessory on hand at the 2024 Met Gala, Phoebe had a different date with her on the red carpet: makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury. Plus, it was an extra special night for the Fair Play star, as she became the first person to wear Victoria Beckham’s line to the star-studded event.
“It’s her first custom look,” Phoebe said on Live From E!, “so I’m thrilled to be wearing it.”
“We started with fabrics,” the English actress continued, noting they wanted something “fragile” to go along with the Costume Institute’s “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” exhibition. “Something elegant and beautiful that fits in with this beautiful theme. So, I think we did well.”
As Victoria noted on Instagram, the gown’s silhouette was hand-crafted from archival lace.
“And embellished with over 300 lace appliqué flowers,” she shared, “hand-cut and hand-sewn onto a tulle base.”
As for how Phoebe was feeling on the milestone night?
“It’s so crazy and surreal,” she said on Live From E!. “I’m trying to just be present in this moment right now but it’s very hard.”

Meryl Streep Guest of honour at the opening ceremony of the 77th Festival de Cannes

Meryl Streep will be the guest of honour at the opening ceremony of the 77th Festival de Cannes which will take place on the stage of the Grand Théâtre Lumière on Tuesday, May 14. A celebrated figure in American cinema, the American actress will kick-off the upcoming edition which will draw to a close on Saturday, May 25th with the awards’ list given by the President of the Jury, Greta Gerwig.

After Jeanne Moreau, Marco Bellocchio, Catherine Deneuve, Jean-Pierre Léaud, Jane Fonda, Agnès Varda, Forest Whitaker or Jodie Foster, Meryl Streep will receive the Festival’s Honorary Palme d’or. 35 years after winning the Best Actress award for Evil Angels, her only appearance in Cannes to date, Meryl Streep will be making her long-awaited return to the Croisette.

“I am immeasurably honored to receive the news of this prestigious award. To win a prize at Cannes, for the international community of artists, has always represented the highest achievement in the art of filmmaking. To stand in the shadow of those who have previously been honored is humbling and thrilling in equal part. I so look forward to coming to France to thank everyone in person this May!” Meryl Streep stated.

“We all have something in us of Meryl Streep!” Iris Knobloch and Thierry Frémaux said. “We all have something in us of Kramer vs. Kramer, Sophie’s Choice, Out of Africa, The Bridges of Madison County, The Devil Wears Prada and Mamma Mia! Because she has spanned almost 50 years of cinema and embodied countless masterpieces, Meryl Streep is part of our collective imagination, our shared love of cinema.”

After her drama studies and initial success on New York City stages, Meryl Streep’s career took off on the big screen in 1978 with The Deer Hunter, starring Robert De Niro. In Michael Cimino’s film, Meryl Streep wrote all her lines to give her character nuance and depth. This marked both her first Oscar nomination — now reaching a record 21 — and her demand to play strong, ambivalent women. For example, when she starred opposite Dustin Hoffman in Kramer vs. Kramer, she refused to let the film revolve around the male lead and rewrote a crucial monologue. She went on to win her first Oscar, and quickly gained recognition from the audiences and the industry alike.

Meryl Streep uses her intuition and hard work to reinvent herself with every appearance. Even on the scale of a film: in Karel Reisz’s The French Lieutenant’s Woman, she played two roles. In Alan J. Pakula’s Sophie’s Choice, her acting addresses a mother’s inconceivable moral dilemma. For this character, she studied German and Polish to take on the accent — impeccable according to Andrzej Wajda — and won the Academy Award for Best Actress.

Sidney Pollack’s unforgettable historical, romantic epic Out of Africa (1985) marked a new turning point, in which she and Robert Redford formed one of cinema’s most legendary couples. Far from confining herself to the register of passionate love, Meryl Streep also ventured into darker characters. In Fred Schepisi’s 1988 Evil Angels (A Cry in the Dark), she played a mother accused of infanticide. Her performance earned her the Best Actress Award at the 1989 Festival de Cannes.

In the 1990s, she tried her hand at gritty comedy: she challenged female stereotypes in Mike Nichols’ Postcards from the Edge and Robert Zemeckis’ Death Becomes Her. In The Bridges of Madison County, she captured the screen alongside Clint Eastwood in a love story as impossible as it is timeless, that went down in cinema history.

Throughout her career, Meryl Streep has never shied away from publicly denouncing the precarious position of women in the film industry. Aware of the issues surrounding the representation of women in Hollywood movies, and keen to embody all their facets in all their complexity and fragility, Meryl Streep plays a wide variety of roles and genres. After Stephen Daldry’s The Hours and Robert Altman’s The Last Show, it was in two roles as funny as unexpected that she once again made her mark: as the cantankerous editor-in-chief of a fashion magazine in The Devil Wears Prada and Donna, a hippie who marries off her daughter in the musical Mamma Mia! She went on to star in biopics (The Iron Lady, Florence Foster Jenkins, Julie & Julia), political satyres (Lions for Lambs, Pentagon Papers, Don’t Look Up) and family films such as Little Women, directed by Greta Gerwig, who serves as President of the Jury at this year’s Festival de Cannes.
