Multiple award-winning Ghanaian actress, Gloria Sarfo has opened up about the challenges she faced in the film industry, particularly regarding her portrayal in the popular local TV series “Efiewura.”
Despite her numerous accolades, including the prestigious Best Supporting Actress award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) in March 2020, Gloria revealed that some movie producers sidelined her due to her role in “Efiewura.”
In an exclusive interview on TV3’s Ladies Circle on TV3, the screen goddess made known how being associated with “Efiewura” led to misconceptions about her ability to express herself in English. This perception, she explained, affected her chances of being cast in certain roles and being featured prominently in promotional materials.
Sarfo recounted being told that her active role in “Efiewura” might hinder her from portraying affluent characters in glamourous movies.
“Before I used to get worried, I used to talk a lot. Before I had a tag about the role i was playing in Efiewura, so people I thought I couldn’t even express myself in the English Language. So everything was about I am a local actress because of Efiewura.
“Someone actually told me that because of my active role in Efiewura, I may not be able to feature as a wealthy man’s daughter in any glamour movie,” she said
Despite these challenges, the thespian credits filmmaker Shirley Frimpong Manso for believing in her talent and casting her in significant roles, notably in the film “Perfect Picture.”

Contrary to the stereotypes she faced, Gloria emphasized that her proficiency in speaking Twi in movies was what earned her recognition and awards. While she acknowledges the importance of consistency in roles, she finds the negative implications associated with it disheartening.
Gloria’s story sheds light on the complexities and biases present in the film industry, highlighting the importance of challenging stereotypes and recognizing talent beyond preconceived notions.
