In the landscape of the Ghanaian music space, certain songs have the ability to transcend national boundaries and leave an indelible mark on the global stage. One of such songs that catapulted an artist beyond the borders of Ghana was ’16 years’, a poignant track that became a defining moment in the career of MzBel.

Released in the early 2000s, the song wasn’t just another beautiful for the Ghanaian music star, but a powerful narrative that tackled a sensitive and prevelant social issues in the country. According to Mzbel, the song brought to her so many opportunities including the opportunity to reveal outside Ghana for the first time.

The singer who doubles as an entrepreneur stated that the song, which was born out of conversations about rape and the vulnerability of the girl child also brought her some good money.

” 16 years started taking me out of  Ghana and the money as good,” she said in an recent interview.

MzBel further disclosed that people outside Ghana reacted differently to the song although there was no difference with regard to the perception people had about her.

”It didn’t change the perception that I as a bad girl but it changed everything in terms of bringing funds and touring around the world.”
