The day was last Friday 16th February 2018. Eight (8) out of the 10 senior high schools who participated in the project gathered at the SNNIT Auditorium, Adum-Kumasi. They met for the #Code4Girls Final Competition organised by @hapaSpace. The Title sponsor for #Code4Girls is Google and supported by the Hapa Foundation, @Hapaweb Solutions, Indigo Trust and other individuals. The 8 participating schools were as follows; St. Louis SHS St. Monicas SHS Kumasi Wesley Girls SHS Kumasi Anglican SHS Real Amass Aburi Girls SHS Ahantaman Girls SHS Holy Child SHS #Code4Girls was a six months computer programming course in HTML & CSS for girls in 10 Senior High Schools in 4 regions of Ghana. Each school trained about 100 girls over the 6-month period. In all, over 1000 girls were trained to build basic websites with HTML and CSS. Amazingly, some schools went a step ahead to learn Bootstrap and Java on their own. Each school was represented by 3 girls at the competition. The teams were given 3 hours to develop a website in one of the following areas; Education, Sports, Fashion, Celebrity and Community Websites. Our girls are good!!! All teachers, students, public and judges were thrilled at what the girls could do within the 3 hours. Aside managing their inline and external CSS, commenting their codes out properly, some girls ensured their website is mobile responsive. More of such events are needed to dig out and shape the talents of girls in this male dominated field. The judges focused on the following criteria; Code Quality Functionality Code Readability Website Design Team Work Presentation At the end of the competition, Ahantaman Girls School was crowned the #Code4Girls Queens, 2018 with St. Monicas and St. Louis Schools coming in as 1st and 2nd runner ups. Kudos to all these schools and the others that participated. Each school walked away with a prize. They all got one mini laptop with a mini projector. This will help the ICT clubs when they meet to learn their coding. #Code4Girls will be an annual project that promotes the study of computer programming by girls. The 1st three schools got different kinds of printers to use at their offices. A branded pen drive was given to each of the girls that represented the schools. Certificates of participation and trophies were given to the 1st three schools; thanks to the individuals that supported this!
