The 2011 holiday season is off to a hilarious start on DStv with the launch of Comedy Central on channel 122 this December. So, be ready to laugh to your heart’s content and be jolly this festive season with the impressive line-up of programmes that Comedy Central has in store for you. Here’s a sneak peek at some of the world class comedy you can look forward to:
The Colbert Report : There’s another loudmouth, opinionated and self-important political pundit in town, and he’s blowing a whole lot of hot air. His name is Stephen Colbert, and he’s the spoof host of the Emmy® and Peabody® Award-winning The Colbert Report – a no-holds-barred satirical talk show in which the important topics of our time and the daily news are treated with absolutely no seriousness whatsoever!
Stephen Colbert is preaching ‘truthiness’ – his version of the truth and the only version that matters. He’s always picking fights and winning one-sided arguments with the biggest names in the biggest house of the biggest branch of government with his unique House of Representatives segment, “Better Know A District.“ Other guests who have had the honour of finding out why they’re just plain wrong include Barack and Michele Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and Neil young, to name a few. The Colbert Report premiers on Comedy Central on Tuesday 6 December at 23:35 CAT.
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart: Jon Stewart, host, executive producer and writer of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, is considered one of America’s top social and comedic voices as the spoof host of his own network news programme. From his anchor chair Stewart has interviewed such luminaries as President Barack Obama, former Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter, Vice President Joe Biden, former Vice President Al Gore, Senators John Kerry and John McCain and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, and celebrity icons like Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks and Bruce Willis.
Stewart and The Daily Show have received 36 Emmy® Award nominations and won 14 times. These include winning for Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Program six times as well as Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series for the past eight years, an Emmy record for consecutive wins in any category. Jon himself was nominated for Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program five times.
The Comedy Central Roast of Charlie Sheen : The Emmy®-nominated Comedy Central Roast is an annual star-studded event in which Comedy Central hand-picks a special Roastee to sit on the hot seat and take it on the chin for the evening with good-natured ribbing from colleagues and comics. Past ‘Roastees’ have included David Hasselhoff, Donald Trump, Denis Leary, Jeff Foxworthy, Pamela Anderson, William Shatner , Joan Rivers and Flavor Flav. Roasters for this outrageous event have included John Stamos, Tommy Lee, Courtney Love, Snoop Dogg, Larry the Cable Guy and Ice-T.
The most watched ever episode of the Comedy Central Roast franchise was the Comedy Central Roast of Charlie Sheen. Fresh from his public meltdown and sacking from Two and a Half Men , Sheen showed he was game for a laugh by participating in the Roast, which saw him ‘roasted’ and mocked by – among others William Shatner, Mike Tyson and Slash from Guns N Roses, led by Roast Master Seth McFarlane. The Comedy Central Roast of Charlie Sheen premiers on Comedy Central on Tuesday 6 December at 21:00 CAT.
Richard Pryor – I Aint Dead Yet: Comedy Central pays homage to late, great comic Richard Pryor who died in 2005. Together with clips from Pryor’s impressive comedy archive are tributes from friends and family including Jamie Foxx, Whoopie Goldberg, Dennis Leary, Dave Chapelle and Mos Def, I Aint Dead Yet shows Richard Pryor at his outspoken best, with his uncompromising examinations of racism and topical contemporary issues. Widely regarded as one of the most important and influential stand-up comedians of his era, Pryor touched a broad audience with his observations and storytelling style. Richard Pryor – I Aint Dead Yet premieres on the channel on Saturday 10 December at 22:15 CAT.
Southpark: Created by comic geniuses Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the Emmy® and Peabody® Award-winning, animated series, South Park, features the breathtakingly funny misadventures of four foul-mouthed, troublemaking young boys in a small town nestled in the Colorado Rockies. The show has been praised by the prestigious Peabody® committee as “a notoriously rude, undeniably fearless lampoon of all that is self-important and hypocritical in American life, regardless of race, creed, colour or celebrity status.”
Created in 1997, South Park is now in its 15th season and fresh off its fourth Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program, it continues to surprise even its most devoted fans each and every week. Known for its unbelievably immediate and ruthless responses to world events, South Park’s new episodes bring up-to-the-minute news and pop culture icons (including Al Gore, J. Lo, Oprah, Sir Elton John, Tom Cruise, John Travolta, and P. Diddy) to the town of South Park for social commentary and good old-fashioned ridicule. Co-creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone recently signed a deal with Comedy Central which confirms that they will continue to create original series of South Park right through to 2016. South Park premieres on Tuesday 6 December at 22:15 CAT & 22:45 CAT.
Gary Unmarried: Jay Mohr and Paula Marshall star in this family comedy about Gary Brooks, a recently single painting contractor, and his controlling ex-wife, Allison, who face post-divorce mayhem after 15 years of marriage as they each embark on new relationships. He’s the fun parent and she’s the strict one. Together, they share custody of their two children – Louise a politically correct and environmentally conscious 11-year-old, and Tom their socially awkward 14-year-old son who is nervous around girls. The charming and sharp Gary hasn’t dated since the split, but finally connects with Vanessa a single mother whose condo he was hired to paint.
Gary dreads telling Allison about Vanessa because it doesn’t adhere to her belief in their marriage counsellor’s book, “Rules for the Perfect Divorce.” However, when Allison tells him that she’s engaged to their shrink, all bets are off and Gary decides it’s time to move forward. Now, in pursuit of post-marriage happiness, Gary must juggle his eclectic world of an ex-wife, their two kids, their shrink and his gorgeous new girlfriend. Gary Unmarried will air every Monday to Friday at 11:25 CAT, 15:35 CAT, 19:05 CAT & 23:35 CAT.
