Ghanaian celebs embark on a social media peace campaign to address Accra unrest

Ghanaian celebrities have started a peace campaign on social media to address the cases of violence that have been reported in parts of Accra following the arrest of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Assin North, Kennedy Agyapong.The celebrities have been sending the following generic messages to fans, family and friends on BlackBerry Messenger, Twitter and Facebook: “ I am…I stand for peace in Ghana”. The message also asks their followers to rebroadcast the message so the chain for peace continues.   The celebrities that have so far joined the campaign include, Kwaw Kese, Samini, Bertha, Luckie Lawson, and others. Meanwhile other personalities, such as Ghanaian film maker, Leila Djansi have been sending their own messages across to their followers.   Dozens of the NPP supporters massed up at the Police Headquarters protesting the arrest of the NPP MP who has been detained at the BNI over comments he made on Oman FM, Friday.   The supporters pelted the police with stones after the MP was whisked away in a van. The police also fired rubber bullets, water cannons to ward-off the rampaging supporters. The situation was said to have reached an alarming proportion but Cephas Arthur, Police acting Director of Communications Cephas, insists the police is firmly in control.]]>
