Ghanaian poet, Prof Kofi Awoonor dies in Kenyan Shopping Mall attack

<![CDATA[Former Chairman of the Council of State, Prof. Kofi Awoonor has died in the Al-Shabab attack that took place in the Kenyan Mall on Saturday. A statement issued by the Deputy Minister of Information and Media Relations, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, stated that Prof. Awooner “died from injuries sustained during an attack on the Westgate Shopping Mall in Nairobi.” According to the statement, Prof. Awoonor’s son who also sustained injuries in the attack has “survived and is currently responding to treatment.”

The report of the death of the former Council of State Chairman has sent a lot of shock among Ghanaians with some government officials using the medium of Social Media to express their condolence.

Deputy Information Minister, Felix Kwakye Ofosu posted of his Facebook wall, “RIP Prof Awoonor. You served your nation well.”

Also, the Deputy Minister of Education, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa tweeted that, “Terrorism anywhere remains a threat to humanity everywhere. Bless your soul Prof Kofi Awoonor & all victims of this senseless attack in Kenya.” Kofi Awoonor is a Ghanaian poet and author whose work combines the poetic traditions of his native Ewe people and contemporary and religious symbolism to depict Africa during decolonization.
