Students, teachers, parents and the PTA of Ghana International School gave a generous gift to a 17 year-old girl on Friday (10 December) when they presented her and her mother with Ghc12000 in order for her to have life-saving heart surgery.

For the past three months, GIS has been appealing for funds so that Ernestina Afriyie can have the hole in her heart repaired. GIS became aware of Ernestina’s plight through the Golden Hearts Trust – a charity that raises funds for children with heart conditions.

At a special assembly, Mrs Mary Ocansey, the GIS Junior School Vice-Principal thanked the school body for their generosity. She added, “It was a whole school effort. We have taken Ernestina as one of us. She regularly visits us and we are delighted to be able to help. I’d like to also thank our PTA for generously adding Ghc1,000 to bring our final total to Ghc12,000.”

Jackie Ahomka Lindsay, from the Golden Hearts Trust thanked the school and said, “This is a triumph for the GIS family. The money will enable Ernestina to have her full operation and leave enough funds so that another sick child can have a shunt fitted in their heart.”

Speaking on behalf of Ernestina’s mother and family, GIS Upper Secondary School Vice-Principal, Mr Arku remarked, “Ernestina’s family would like to thank the school for the donation.”

For years, Ghana International School has raised funds for sick children to have life-saving surgery. The school continues to be committed to helping the less fortunate and most vulnerable in our society.
