While most teens on summer break are spending time on vacations or internships, a group of teens between the ages of 16 and 19 traveled from the United States to serve the people of Oshiye in the Ga-South municipality of the Greater Accra region through the Humanitarian Experience for Youth (HEFY) program.

The twenty three-member team are building a four-unit classroom block from scratch by themselves and with funds from their personal saving as a humanitarian experience for the summer. From mixing of concrete, building walls, sand-papering and painting old classrooms in the school.

On why the group decided to embark on the project at the Oshiyie M/A Basic School, leader of the group, Steve Olson said:

“One of the main goals of HEFY is to have sustainable humanitarian efforts that can support self-reliance. Education is one thing that everyone can always benefit from, especially education for girls in Africa is so important and that is one of the reasons we chose to work on a school.

We chose a location that really needed our service and Oshiyie with how many kids they have and the few classrooms available, it was a great option to come offer our help to them.”

Local coordinator, Ebenezer Amomah Asamoah of Every Child International who sources projects for the program explained how the project is run.

“They will be here for two weeks and then another group will be here for another two weeks; altogether there will be five groups in total, and the project will carry out from now until the first week of August.  This is the second group who are building on the foundation laid by the first group. When they are done the next group will come and build the walls. After the fifth group is done and the project is completed we then officially hand it to the community”

The HEFY projects engage young participants in humanitarian work to build classrooms, homes, orphanages, health clinics and other sustainable beneficial facilities for under-developed communities in various countries.
