Okyeame Kwame takes on hip-hop opera with hiplife cantata, December 14!

Published

on

As an observer of Ghanaian creativity, I have seen Ghanaian musicians explore new and artistic ideas. Among the constant development has been the unique blend of music and story which has birthed concepts like Pidjin Music’s ‘Culture Caravan’ and ‘Coz Ov Money’. On Friday, December 14, rapper Okyeame Kwame will challenge himself with a much more contemporary concept that would mix music with dance and theatre, perhaps his idea of a hip-hop opera or rather, hiplife cantata! After months of publicity, the Okyeame Kwame Versatile Show finally plays at the National Theatre this Friday. The Show which seeks to combine Music, Dance and Theater, started with a great concept of a weekly reality series countdown which kept fans informed of every development along the way until the show finally hits the stage. This week marked the final rehearsal with the ex-megastar band. All artistes performing came over to have their sessions albeit in stages. There was Raquel, Samini, Kofi B, Vera of D3, Edem, Kesse, Bradez, to mention a few. One thing certain about all the artistes on the bill was their zeal and preparedness to interact with their fans on stage again. They all made it clear that, it was fun working with the band but for a musician, the real joy is when you are up on stage and you can feel the energy with the crowd in their response. Ebo Whyte and his Roverman crew did not want to talk much but rather strive for to once again be judged by their performance after the show. Roverman Production is well noted for bringing the stage alive in living colors by telling everyday stories which people can relate to. On the Okyeame Kwame Versatile Show, they promise it won’t be anything short of what they are noted for with theatre. However, regarding the difference between this Versatile Show and their Productions, they said that is their little secret they won’t reveal until they are up on stage. The versatile man himself, Okyeame Kwame, said for him it has been a journey. “I thank God almighty that this dream has also been realized. With the support I have from my fellow artiste, I am raring to go out there and make this a big success.” Okyeame Kwame confessed it has been very difficult but he would do this again despite the challenges, “coordinating this whole event has not been easy but am grateful to my staff who put their shoulders to the wheel to make it all a reality. I would urge all people out there to come to the National Theatre in their Numbers to support this cause. For me that is my motivation.” The Rap Doctor has already said on the fourth episode of the Versatile Show Countdown that, he sees the final event as having fun on stage because the real work would have been done during rehearsal and promises fans this won’t be anything short of giving his all. Okyeame Kwame says he is indebted to the sponsors who believe in his dreams and gave their support to make it a reality. For accomplished Choreographer, Professor Nii Yartey, this is yet another opportunity to show his versatile side by fusing modernity with tradition when it comes to dancing. The Noyam Dance Group, well noted for winning international award for their dance choreographer are enthusiastic about showcasing Ghanaian dance fusion to make a statement. The Street Dancers who went through auditions from legon through to Exopa are ripe to show patrons their talents and skills. From the foregoing, all is set for the Okyeame Kwame Versatile Show to light the fire that set the National Theatre ablaze on Friday, December 14. Will it be Ebo Whyte with Roverman Production who wins steal this show with his dramatization? Will Okyeame Kwame and his fellow artistes make the fat lady sing? Or Professor Nii Yartey’s crew will wow us with their dance crew moves…Don’t miss the Okyeame Kwame and the battle of versatility at the National Theatre this Friday. Okyeame Kwame Versatile Show is sponsored by MTN, supported by Coca Cola, Fiesta Condoms, Roverman Productions, AheadMedia and Tecno and powered by GhOne Entertainment.]]>
