Kimonos by Norway-based Ghanaian designer, T-Michael to showcase at Victoria and Albert Museum #AmeyawMeets

Norway-based Ghanaian designer and creative powerhouse, T-Michael will have his T-Kimono featured at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum’s ‘Kimono: Kyoto to Catwalk’ Exhibition in 2020.

T-Michael disclosed this in an interview with me, on his visit to Ghana during the festive season. He mentioned the exhibition as part of his personal highlights in creative career, which spans across almost three decades.

The T-Kimono is a collaboration between T-Michael and Y. & Sons (Yamato Ltd) a traditional kimono maker from Japan established in 1917 with over 135 stores in Japan. The concept was to present the kimono as an everyday menswear staple in the wardrobe of men today, alongside other staples such as the suit, blazer, jeans and the iconic white shirt.

The T Kimono is created from a self-designed flannel wool cloth from Spain with a distinct mono stripe running through the entire length of the cloth, juxtaposed with the traditional kimono techniques.

Traditional tailoring, textiles, shapes and forms from all around the world inspire T-Michael’s work.  He has a conceptual approach to men’s tailoring inspired by his love of sartorial traditions and his passionate quest for a different narrative within tailoring, design and creativity, to celebrate stylistic and cultural diversities present in today’s zeitgeist.These can be seen and felt througout his three main range of products namely T-Michael, T Kimono , and Norwegian Rain .
