Newcomer, Naa Adjeley Tubua or simply ‘Adjeley’ may be new on the Ghanaian music scene but she has been singing from a rather early age and says music has always been a part of her. As a child, she would always sit and listen to different types of music and from that she has grown into a versatile singer who can perform from soul music to R&B and hiplife.

Growing up in the West Orange area of New Jersey in the US (where she was born) didn’t deprive her of her Ghanaian roots as is evident in her first single, ‘Antwekyere’ featuring rapper Trigmatic. The single is already buzzing on radio and the internet; and with music video soon to be released, it’s only a matter of time for it to hit television across Ghana. The song tells an unusual love story, with a catchy chorus that cleverly picks from an old Ghanaian folksong.  It’s a mellow mix of Adjeley’s sweet vocals and Trigmatic’s distinct punch lines together in ‘Twi’, ‘Ga’ and English. “I felt as though Trigmatic would be the perfect candidate for this single. I love his enthusiasm and energy”, comments the singer on the collaboration.

Adjeley is not entirely new to the music business; she has performed in front of audiences on a few occasions in the US and she believes she would draw on those experiences when her career is finally launched with her almost complete debut album. She also believes that she is ready to treat the world to her music. “What inspire my music are the experiences I have gone through.  Whenever I go through things, I love to express myself through music. Music is therapeutic and it is a way to open up to listeners. I’m ready to launch!”

Apart from the Hubert Kofi-Anti (UBeatz) and Ben Byte produced first single, ‘Antwekyere’, there are other songs already done for the album. According to the singer, she is half way done with the album and everyone should expect her debut by the ending of August or beginning of September.

Adjeley cites travelling back and forth between the US and Ghana as the biggest challenge she faces in getting her album ready and promoting her single so far.  She comments that the Ghanaian music industry is really growing, with people from all over the world listening to Ghanaian music as it moves on to the next level. She therefore believes her kind of music would find a place in Ghana and reach the people who love and listen to Ghanaian music.

“My music is fresh and new; something different that people will be drawn to. Music is music and it unites everyone. It’s the universal language. I’ll be bringing in some western style music with Ghanaian music. So I will have something for everyone”, she explains.

Adjeley is certainly not going to bow out to the pressures of the industry and says that as a female artist in a predominately male industry, her job is to work ten times harder to make sure she stands out so that people will have a different perspective on female artists. She believes there is room for her to share the spotlight with other Ghanaian female singers without looking at them as competition. She comments: “Honestly, I’m not one to start controversy and drama. I feel as though there is plenty of room for more than one female artist to progress in this industry. I actually like Becca and think that she is a wonderful singer and role model.”

Adjeley hopes that Ghana and the rest of Africa would be ready for her music – music from the heart, the soul and the mind, music that will make you laugh, get on the floor and dance or sometimes cry.
