Since Ghana became an independent nation in 1957, its music industry has exploded and evolved into something truly extraordinary. Ghana has been a source to help grow West African music, and they create unique and innovative sounds. Utilizing its Caribbean influences and adding its own unique flare, Ghana has created their version of pop music with swing, rock, jazz, and soukous elements. 

These musicians are not just known within Africa. Their talent has earned them nominations for International music awards like the Grammys and BET Awards. Top genres include reggae, highlife, Afrobeat, Afro-pop and R&B, Azonto, and Kpanlogo. Some artists have even created their management firms, such as Shatta Wale Management, and have had tremendous success.

Kelvyn Boy 

Kelvyn Boy is known as one of the best Afrobeats artists in Ghana. He is from the central region of Ghana, Assin Fosu. Some of his songs are perfect for a beach day, while some have a fantastic highlife style. 


Popular songs include; ‘Yawa No Dey’, ‘Momo’, ‘Down Flat’, and ‘Catch A Vibe’. 

Shatta Wale 

Shatta Wale, formerly known as Bandana, is incredibly talented and has even been known for appearing as an actor in films such as ‘Never Say Never,’ The Trial of Shatta Wale,’ and ‘Shattered.’ 

He is considered one of the top musicians in Ghana for genres that include highlife, reggae and Afrobeat. Shatta Wale is best known for his song ‘Dancehall King’ which earned him Artists of the Year at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, but also has other hits such as; ‘My Level,’ and ‘We Taking Over.’

La Même Gang 

La Même Gang is a collective helping to shape a new wave of music that utilizes their style that incorporates Afro-futurism, Afro-grime and Highlife. They have six key members: Darkovibes, RJZ, Kiddblack, $pacely, Nxwrth and KwakuBS.


La Même Gang is innovative and impressive, and with a wide variety of styles, they suit the preferences of any listener. Some essential tracks to check out include; ‘Stone Island,’ ‘Gold Coast,’ and ‘Accra Stay by Plan.’ 

King Promise 

King promise is often referred to as the king of Ghanaian R&B with his smooth vocals and percussion that was made for the dancefloor. He has created music with top artists like Raye, R2bees and Wizkid and rocked sold-out European shows in 2019. 

Key songs to check out include; ‘Oh Yeah,’ ‘Selfish,’ and ‘Tokyo.’ 


Sarkodie has been performing for around two decades, which has earned him the title of the richest musician in Ghana. He is one of the originators of the Azonto genre, and many refer to him as the greatest African hip-hop artist of all time. He was the first winner of BET’s Best International Flow Artist during the 2019 BET Hip Hop Awards.
