Celebrating our planet on International Earth Day

Published

on

Our world is constantly changing at a rapid rate. As we look to continuously improve the well-being and quality of life of humankind, we also need to think about how these improvements impact the world around us. As the effects of climate change start to become increasingly real, it’s time to take responsibility for our actions and give back to the Earth.

As John Ruskin once said, “Nature is painting for us, day after day, pictures of infinite beauty.” If we want to preserve this beauty and rich biodiversity for generations to come, we should all start thinking about what we can do together to make a difference. To get you started, here are some easy ways to do your part in conserving our environment.

  • Where you can, choose reusable items instead of single-use plastic. Start taking your own bags to the supermarket, avoid using plastic straws and other disposable plastic items, such as cups or plastic wrap.
  • Conserve energy where you can – switch off non-essential appliances when not in use.
  • Try and eat less meat – even if you go meat free just one day a week, it adds up.
  • Educate yourself and your family – from staying informed about the Earth’s incredible wildlife to learning about climate change, knowledge is power when it comes to looking after our planet.

So, in honour of Earth Day, here’s some of the best environmental content to help you on your journey to saving the planet.

Earthrise

When it comes to creating awareness about environmental threats, Earthrise seeks to educate audiences about our endangered wildlife and the efforts in place to protect them. The episode we are showcasing for Earth Day is ‘Wild Recovery’, dedicated to investigating the impact COVID-19 has had on two endangered mammals due to their perceived association with the disease. You can watch this episode on Wednesdaysat 11:30 CAT on Al Jazeera, DStv Channel 406.
