Grammy award-winning Nigerian artist, Wizkid is currently trending after making some statements about the status of the rap genre in Nigeria.

In his recent interview with UK-based ‘10 magazine’ Wizkid called the rap genre “dead.”

 “I don’t listen to rap, that shit is boring to me. It’s dead now, it’s tired. These guys do the same shit, rap on the same beats and the same flows,” he stated.

After the interview went viral, some rappers in Nigeria have not taken his comments lightly. Wizkid has since received verbal attacks from Ml Abaga alongside other Nigerian rappers.

In one post, he called rappers “broke.”

In a separate post, he wrote; “y’all not even rappers, Nasty C, Sarkodie and Black Sherif are the only rappers in Africa.”

Despite the back on forth about his comments on social media, the “More Love Less Ego” singer is still defending his comments, stating that Afrobeats is the new pop.

“Afrobeats is the new pop. I sold two million copies in American off of one song! Even some American artists don’t have a diamond record. If I don’t listen to any other genre of music anymore,” he stated.

Trying to reduce the impact of his comments, he added;

“No disrespect to nobody. I don’t have anything against rap or any other type of music. I have a lot of rappers as friends, like a lot. So, I’m probably the wrong person to say this”. Unfortunately, the harm had already been done.”
