Someone once described Tinchy Stryder as a grime Mozart in that he’s been a prodigiously talented musician from a young age. He’s risen to become an international star, credited with re-igniting interest in British rap while working with Jay-Z to set up his own label to break new talent.
Forget about using a stage – so 1998 – Tinchy is all about an impromptu gig at your local mobile phone retailer, preferably if you have a friend who works there and can grant you access to the iPad store cupboard. That’s exactly what he did recently with his crew when they stormed The Carphone Warehouse in London. Yep, Tinchy’s gone all Little Boots as he plays his music over 10 iPads using a slew of music-related apps from I Am T-Pain to Hand Drums and Instant Guitar Solo II. It’s pretty impressive.
It was recently reported that perhaps inspired by Damon Albarn’s animated band Gorillaz, the Ghanaian born British hip-hop star would be recording his next album on an Apple iPad. Albarn’s latest material for the group was created on the handheld computer, and Stryder admits he’d love to do the same after discovering the benefits of the device. He told The Sun, “I never thought this could happen. I always loved the sound of real drums and keyboards, but after playing my tracks live on an iPad I think differently. If Damon can do it then that’s inspiring. It’s very interesting and something I’ll definitely try in the future.”
Ghanaians can catch the rapper and a host of UK-based Ghanaian artists at the ‘Ghana Rocks’ jams at the Conference Center Dome on December 27. Tinchy Stryder and KIG Family from the UK share the stage with VIP, Trigmatic, Ayigbe Edem, Tinny, D-Black, Five 5, Castro, the Skillions and many more
