“Ghanaian Jollof Has Garnishing” – Ayra Starr on Why She Prefers It to Nigerian Jollof Rice

Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, professionally known as Ayra Starr, has disclosed her preference for Ghanaian jollof rice over Nigerian jollof.

In a recent game of 21 questions on BET Amplified, the ‘Ngonzi Hitmaker shared her love for both dishes but highlighted the garnishing of Ghanaian jollof as the key factor that sets it apart.

When asked which version she prefers, Ayra Starr did not hesitate to express her choice: “Ghanaian jollof.” She went on to explain the differences between the two iconic dishes, noting that they each have unique qualities.

“I mean, they are both really amazing. I grew up with Nigerian jollof rice. Nigerian jollof is practically called party rice, so people eat it at parties. It is like a celebratory food.”

Ayra Starr further shed light on the preparation and cultural traditions surrounding Nigerian jollof. “The culture around it is that they usually use a big pot to cook it outside, so it kind of burns and it is smoky. So it is smoky jollof rice, that is what it is called,” she added.

Comparing it to Ghanaian jollof, the musician highlighted the garnishes and ingredients. “Ghanaian jollof rice has like things inside but for Nigerian jollof, the protein, vegetables are outside if you are having anything else. So it is two different vibes.”
