Apple Music celebrates the spirit of Umoja for Africa Month

Published

on

With the eyes and ears of the world currently on Africa, Apple Music is celebrating Africa Month this May with a campaign  themed around Umoja and a message of unity and togetherness. The campaign also shines a spotlight on the new generation of African artists who are changing the narrative in the music industry locally and abroad.
The campaign features an exclusive Africa Month Umoja playlist which includes some of the best cross-continental collaborations in recent memory, with music from Focalistic & Davido, Naira Marley & Busiswa, Gyakie feat. Omah Lay as well as AKA feat. Burna Boy.

Also included are 12 exclusive guest playlists from artists including Omah Lay (Nigeria), Manu Worldstar (DR Congo/SA), Tems (Nigeria) and Amaarae (Ghana), all alumni of Apple Music’s emerging-artist spotlight program Africa Rising.  Representing Lusophone Africa is Nenny (Cape Verde) and Calema (São Tomé and Príncipe), from East Africa is Zuchu (Tanzania) and Nviiri The Storyteller (Kenya), for Francophone Africa we have Suspect 95 (Ivory Coast) and Tayc (Cameroon), and lastly representing Southern Africa, we have Focalistic (South Africa) and BET award-winner Sha Sha (Zimbabwe). The playlists are made up of songs that make the artists proud to be African, or that have changed the landscape of music in Africa.

Africa Month will also be supported across Apple Music Radio. Africa Now Radio with Cuppy will be hosting a special Africa Month ‘Umoja’ special on Sunday 30th May to celebrate the 1st anniversary of the show and pay tribute to some of the best collaborations on the continent. On Apple Music 1’s The Ebro Show, each week Ebro will interview a guest artist from a different region to talk about their exclusive Africa Month playlist, as well as featuring a weekly Motivation Mix from prominent DJs from across the continent playing the best in Amapiano, Afrobeats and more.  Nadeska will also be featuring her Africa Rising artist of the week slot on The Nadeska show each week during the month of May.

The featured artists had this to say about their playlists:

“I picked these songs because they easily represent the growth of Afrobeats over the years, showing how diverse the genre’s sound is. I curated this playlist to display that diversity in sound and each song has its own impact story on Afrobeats,” Omah Lay tells Apple Music.

“These songs transport me to different times in my life and remind me of how music is able to take you back to a particular place and feeling.” – Tems

“What I love most about these songs is their Afrocentric nuance. There’s a rhythm and energy about Africa that’s probably best expressed through our music. I’d like everyone else to tap into these sounds that reflect our strength and beauty as Africans. Africa month symbolizes what I stand for and listen to everyday while relaxing, vibing or hanging out. I definitely love sharing my playlist with everyone and Africa month is the best time to do so because African music speaks to me. I hope this speaks to you too.” – Sha Sha

“These songs make me proud to be African! The pure and exciting creative genius from these African artists makes me proud and sure that Africa to the world is an important mission! I can’t wait for the African Sghubu to take over the world and for the culture to influence many more generations! SGHUBU SES EXCELLENT FROM ME TO YOU!” – Focalistic

“The songs of yesterday that birthed who we are today. This collection of songs explores the politically charged and psychedelic grooves and lyrics of the 70s, the slick sexual innuendos and western R&B/hip hop adjacent production of mid to late 90s highlife and hip life and finally the Afrobeats explosion of the 2010s that charted a new path for African music all together. These songs are the reason I am me and you are you. We’ve lived with them all our lives through our parents, friends, and lovers. Today we celebrate the artists that made these moments possible.” – Amaarae

“We find different music genres of my Cape Verdean roots like Funana, and Morna. And other African flavours like Souk and Gqom that have been keeping me company. When I listen to this playlist I wouldn’t choose anything but to be African.” – Nenny

“Music has been the one consistent voice for us all – uniting, uplifting and entertaining across generations. It has been an unceasing vessel used to tell our untold stories.” – Nviiri The Storyteller

“These are my all time favorite songs as they inspire me to write songs that will live through generations.” – Zuchu

“This playlist is what I define as the New Africa. The vibrant Africa. The unstoppable Africa. These sounds have not just inspired me but have also built me into the artist that I am today. Enjoy.” – Manu Worldstar

“We chose these songs for our playlist especially because they represent our childhood, growing up as little boys into our journey back home in Africa. Our soul and African background is what made us who we are in terms of the creativity we have for music. Everything we sing is a reflection from the journey of our upbringing. Our Lusophone culture is so rich from the rhythms of Cape Verde, Angolan Kizomba, Semba, into Guiné Bissau, Mozambique and of course our home country São Tomé.” – Calema

“Que l’Afrolov’ se répande.” – Tayc

“La musique Africaine à aujourd’hui une place predominante dans l’industrie mondial et nous en sommes fière et ce n’est que le début.” – Suspect 95

Orlando Pirates and RS Berkane square off in CAF Confederation Cup final, available to stream live on Showmax Pro in Africa

Published

on

The annual CAF Confederation Cup comes to an epic close on Friday, 20 May 2022 at Uyo in Nigeria as South Africa’s Orlando Pirates go head to head with Morocco’s RS Berkane.
All the footballing action will be available to stream live on Showmax Pro in Africa from 20:00 (WAT); 21:00 (CAT); 22:00 (EAT), courtesy of SuperSport.
Pirates will be playing in their fourth CAF final despite a shock home defeat to Al Ahli Tripoli in their second semi-final leg as they advanced 2-1 on aggregate to secure their place in the final. Their opponents, RS Berkane, defeated Congolese giants TP Mazembe 4-2 over two legs. RS Berkane, the 2019/2020 CAF Confederations Cup champions, will be playing in their third final after coming up short in 2018/19 when they finished as runners up.
The Soweto giants have not enjoyed a good domestic season as they currently sit in a disappointing seventh place in the DStv Premiership. League form normally goes out the window when it comes to cup competitions and this was the case for Ezimnyama Ngenkani as they topped their group, which consisted of Al-Ittihad Tripoli, JS Saoura and Royal Leopards with four wins, one draw and one defeat in their six games.
The Orange Boys currently share the same domestic position as their opponents as they sit seventh in the Botola Pro 1, further demonstrating that league form does not translate to cup performances. Like Pirates, RS Berkane also topped their group, which had Simba S.C, ASEC Mimosas and Union Sportive Gendarmerie Nationale on the way to the knockout stages, managing three wins, a draw and two losses. This sets up a perfectly balanced final that both sets of supporters and neutrals will be glued to until the final whistle.
The winner of the CAF Confederation Cup will take home a whopping $1.25 million in prize money and will also take part in the CAF Super Cup, where they will play against the winner of the CAF Champions League which will see Al Ahly will battle it out in the final against Wydad Casablanca on Monday, 30 May 2022 – which will also be live on Showmax Pro. All the CAF action will be streaming live for all Showmax Pro subscribers in Africa, courtesy of SuperSport.

Mellow & Sleazy on working separately

We’re almost never in the studio at the same time. He usually makes his own beats separately and I make my own beats separately, then we just exchange the projects and finish off each other’s projects. We just give each other space – he does his own thing, I do my own thing then once we’re done we’ll share what we have done, he’ll edit whatever I’ve done and I’ll edit whatever he did, then it becomes a full song.

Mellow & Sleazy on experimental sounds

So basically we’ve only tried experimenting with two genres, Bacardi and… I forgot the name of the sound but it’s from Angola so we’ve tried experimenting with those two sounds and a bit of soulfulness, because most of the people know us for being hardcore producers that make like loud music all the time, so we tried making it soulful but keeping that element at the same time. The whole EP is Bacardi, basically.

Mellow & Sleazy on exciting talent showcased on their new EP

The underground talent that we have on our EP… the first one is M.J, he’s a rapper and singer. He’s been on a lot of hits actually, he’s one of the vocalists that we always work with because he’s very versatile. He can do what five vocalists can do in the studio, so that’s why we’re always working with him. Another one is Matute Boy. Bacardi usually needs someone to rap fast, and with the lingo… and who else? Azi! Azi is a singer, we’ve just started working with him now, he’s very very new but he’s too much. I’ve never heard a voice like that so yeah, we’ll see where that takes us.

Roland Garros 2022 available on Showmax Pro in select African countries

Published

on

It may be Wimbledon’s Centenary in 2022, but never has such speculation swirled around the build-up to Roland Garros. With the tournament set to stream stream live on Showmax Pro in select African countries*, courtesy of SuperSport, tennis fans will be able to catch all the action starting 22 May 2022.
In the lead-up to the clay court spectacle, 19-year-old Carlos Alcaraz has taken Rafa Nadal, the entrenched Roland Garros bull, by the horns and tossed him onto the side-lines, railroading his quest to win a sixth Madrid title and his 14th French Slam.
With perhaps less ease, Alcaraz then dispatched World No 1, Novak Djokovic, admittedly not fully fit, after a much scrutinised, self-inflicted time away from the Tour. Thereafter, the lesser task accomplished by this teenage phenomenon was to beat physically depleted World No 3, Alexander Zverev.
The unprecedented Madrid victory has catapulted Alcaraz from rank outsider to second favourite at Roland Garros, and the pending winner for this Slam too, long dominated by one reigning king (Nadal), has become as difficult to predict.
French defending champion Djokovic will have to avoid a repeat performance of his resounding US Open loss to World No 2, Daniil Medvedev, and resurrect the game plan whereby he exacted revenge, volleying Medvedev off the court at the Paris Masters.
In the women’s field, Barbora Krejcíková will be aiming to defend her title after defeating Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova during last year’s final. Iga Swiatek goes into the tournament as the World No 1 after Ashleigh Barty’s recent retirement.
It’s no surprise that former No 1 Naomi Osaka, who controversially pulled out of the French Open last year after a first round victory, announced she’ll compete in Paris. However, with a recent withdrawal from the Italian Open with an Achilles injury, the global superstar is set to head to Paris as somewhat of an unknown quantity.
While it cannot be predicted who will take the crown in what is shaping up to be a very open-ended battle of the clay court, the ultimate prerequisites for those in line for the title will be staying on top of their game, laser focus, soft hands at the net and a Teflon temperament.
All the action from the much-anticipated tournament can be live streamed and enjoyed by Showmax Pro Subscribers in Africa, excluding those in South Africa, Lesotho and Mauritius.
*Note that Roland Garros will not be available to live stream on Showmax Pro in South Africa, Lesotho or Mauritius
