Demanding English lyrics from Ghanaian artistes poses threat to cultural identity – NCC
Dr. Richardson Commey Fio, the Acting Deputy Executive Director of the National Commission on Culture (NCC), has cautioned Ghanaian musicians against succumbing to pressure to exclusively use English lyrics.
He believes this demand jeopardizes the preservation of Ghanaian identity on the global stage.
This warning comes in response to advice from Nigerian Gospel musician Nathaniel Bassey, who insists that singing in English is crucial for international success. Dr. Commey Fio criticizes this advice as “backward and anti-African,” emphasizing that the power of music transcends language barriers.
