Efya inspired me to pursue music, I trained my voice with her songs – Asi Renie

Finding inspiration for any creative act can sometimes be hard but for Asi Renie, Efya’s talent was her starting point.

In an interview with AmeyawTV, the rising vocalist discussed her sources of motivation and inspiration in her music career.

A former literature student and poet, Asi describes her music as mostly soulful with fusions of different sounds.

She believes that the growing popularity of soul music in the African market is encouraging people to try new sounds and she is excited to be part of the new school of singers chatting the path of ‘Afro-soul’.

Discussing her main sources of inspiration as a rising afro-soul singer, Asi revealed how Ghanaian songstress, Efya played a big role in her music journey.

The ‘Chapter V’ singer asserts that while she was in high school, she would practice singing along to Efya’s cover of “Obianuju” because she admired the singer’s vocal prowess.

“I believe it was Obianuju when I heard her version; I used to use that to train my voice in high school,” she said.

Nigerian singer and composer, Asa is another person she mentioned as a major inspiration. Asa’s songwriting skills had a big influence on her and made her deliberate with how she crafted her music.

She incorporates such tricks and techniques of her music mentors into her music giving it her own lyrical flair.

Having been inspired by these two African powerhouses, a collaboration with Efya and Asa is the dream goal for Asi Renie.

The 2022 3Music Awards nominee is currently promoting her latest single, ‘I’ll Be There’.
