Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association holds 60th Anniversary Dinner and Awards

Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) as part of activities to mark its 60th Anniversary celebrations held a dinner and awards night on 18th December 2020 at the Kempinski Gold Coast Hotel.

The event which had the Deputy Minister Of Health, Dr. Okoe-Boye in attendance saw various regional and national nurses/midwives across the country being awarded for hard work.

The Upper East Region won the history project contest organized by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association.

The Association tasked its Regional executives in all former 10 Regions to constitute five-member Committees to write a comprehensive history of the GRNMA backed with 10 minutes video documentary on its events for awards.

The purpose of the competition was to enable the 60year old GRNMA to have its history properly documented for future reference and to inform future generations about the chronicle of events since the formation of the Association in 1960.

The Region was awarded Gh₵ 40, 000.00 and a plaque for its “Dedication, commitment and excellent contribution of knowledge towards the development of a comprehensive history for the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association.”

The Eastern and Northern Regions were each awarded Gh₵30, 000.00 and Gh₵20, 000.00 for the second and third positions.

At the end of the event, a 32-year-old community health nurse at the Kundungu Health Centre in the Upper West Region, Mr Surajdeen Haadi, was adjudged the 2020 National Best Nurse/Midwife.  For his reward, Mr Haadi took home a brand new saloon car and a laptop computer.

About 40 nurses and midwives from across the country were recognised for their contribution to healthcare delivery in their respective health facilities.

A nurse from the Western Region, Ms Juliana Owusu-Antwi, won the second prize, as well as the best nurse in her region while Ms Theresa Crentil settled for the third position and also took home the Best Central Regional Nurse award.

For their reward, GH₵40,000 was presented to Ms Owusu-Antwi while the second runner-up also received GH₵ 30,000, in addition to one laptop computer each.

Other nurses and midwives who received best regional awards for their respective regions were Madam Enam Ama Mensah from the Volta Region and Madam Mary Senya Vandampuya, the Greater Accra Region.

The rest are the Ashanti Region, Mr Isaac Gyamfi; the Brong Ahafo Region, Madam Linda Lartey; the Northern Region, Mrs Sylvia Phaphali Adzitey, and the Eastern Region, Madam Gyima Nti-Darkwah.

The occasion was also used to honour some past national executives of the GRNMA for the remarkable leadership qualities they exhibited during their tenure. Additionally, the association paid tribute to all health workers who lost their lives as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
